Lineups
Throughout Mike Tomlin's long tenure as a head coach, he's always preferred to use a workhorse back over an RBBC. Even when Fitzgerald Toussaint and DeAngelo Williams were filling in for Le'Veon Bell a few years back, they could expect a full workload. Conner's talent has never been the question - he's a solid if unspectacular player who can certainly take advantage of the great situation in Pittsburgh. The problem for Conner is his inability to stay on the field, and while he should be very good when healthy, he's one of the bigger injury risks at his position.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
With Le'Veon Bell sitting out all of '18, Conner made the Pro Bowl after racking up nearly 1,500 yards from scrimmage despite missing three December games with an ankle injury. Injuries in 2019 limited him to 99 total yards over three games after October. With former Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter hired as Atlanta's offensive coordinator prior to last season, Falcons QB Matt Ryan took more deep shots in 2019 than he had under Steve Sarkisian the prior couple of years. One of the beneficiaries was Ridley, who was on pace to surpass 80 catches and 1,100 yards when an abdominal injury in the first half of Atlanta's Week 14 game ended his season.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
What an awful season 2019 proved to be for those who drafted James Conner in the first round of drafts. Big Ben was injured, the offense fell apart, Conner's body fell apart and other backs like Benny Snell, Jaylen Samuels and even Kerrith Whyte (who oddly didn't look too bad) swarmed in. With Ben back, Conner ripped like a flying squirrel and another RB in 4th rounder Anthony McFarland in the mix, 2020 has turned into a real crap shoot. With a 4th round price tag though, Conner might just be worth the risk as an upside gamble returning to a good offense where he should be the lead back.Calvin Ridley is the definition of a breakout candidate going into his third season. With Sanu and Hooper out of town and an offense that will need to continue throwing a lot, Ridley should be a strong fantasy option with massive upside if he can start to take over from Julio Jones. Just remember though, there's no guarantee the breakout happens this year so don't pay for his ceiling.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
If Conner were able to stay on the field, he'd be considered as a top-10 running back in fantasy. Unfortunately, he hasn't done that, and it's led them to draft Jaylen Samuels, Benny Snell, and now Anthony McFarland. While none of them are better than Conner, it's likely we see them take some of the workload away from him in 2020.Prior to getting hurt and having his season cut short, Ridley was on pace for 1,066 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019, which would have had him as the WR14. Now going into his third NFL season, there's a real chance for a breakout. Sure, Julio Jones isn't going away but he doesn't have to. Not many realize that Mohamed Sanu saw 94 targets in 2018 and was on pace for 96 targets before being traded in 2019. We don't really expect Russell Gage to fill that role, do we? If you want to know if there's room for both Ridley and Jones to be WR1s, look no further than the Bucs last year with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, even if it is rare for that to happen. Ridley saw 49 targets in the six games he played without Sanu, which would amount to 131 over an entire 16-game season. Ridley has real top-five breakout potential and is an ideal high-end WR2 on your fantasy team.
Frank Bonincontri
Fantasy Wire HQ
Conner will have to stay effective, healthy and productive to fend off the field in Pittsburgh.2020 is the breakout season
Rob Wilson
The Fantasy Footballers
The leading man in the Steel city, and the forgotten man who was a top ten pick last season. Perfect RB2 pickShould breakout, but his ADP has entered 2019 Chris Godwin territory. Pressure to produce is very high, and may not be worth the cost.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
He's an RB1 when healthy, but that's the concern. Still, I'd be OK with him as my #2 RB with that potential.
Dalton Kates
APEX Fantasy Leagues
Conner enters a team which should see massive positive regression back towards one of the best offenses in the league. Was a true workhorse last time he was on the field, but draft pick McFarland along with Snell could keep this a committee. Conner has proven to do well in the NFL even though his athletic profile doesn't necessarily give him the upside we are looking for.
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Many people consider 2019 to be a bad season for Conner but before getting hurt, he was averaging over 14 points per game. Now, Ben Roethlisberger is slated to return and the Steelers offense of old could be coming back together. Getting a piece of that in the 3rd-4th round is terrific value.Calvin Ridley is quietly becoming one of the league's best young breakout WRs. Even while playing second fiddle to Julio Jones, Ridley totaled 833 yards and 7 TDs last year and that was in only 13 games. The Falcons offense is always high-flying and I'd want to get as many pieces of that offense as possible, Ridley very much included.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
7th among RBs in FAN PPG over past 2 seasons (better than Cook, Henry, Mixon, to name a few), but in a prove-it season health wise - figure he's playing for his future in PIT
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
If Conner stays healthy this year, he's almost certainly going to be a draft-day bargain. Through Week 7, before his season was derailed by injury, he was on pace for more than 1400 total yards and 14 touchdowns. Mike Tomlin has come out and essentially stated that Conner is going to be a workhorse back, and he may get even more work in the receiving game if Ben Roethlisberger doesn't push it downfield as much as he used to after elbow surgery. In other words, it's just health with Conner. If he has it, he should be no worse than an extremely strong RB2 in half- or full-PPR leagues.
Jason Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
People are quick to write Conner off, but injuries are the only difference from this season to last where he was being drafted as a first-round pick. In fact, Big-Ben is back, so Conner should have more running lanes than he did last season when he excelled. From weeks 1-8 last season, Conner saw almost 18 touches per game, was sixth among RBs in fantasy points per snap, and forced the second-most missed tackles on receptions. He's also played at least 10 games every year of his career and is an RB1 whenever he's on the field. He's easily worth the third round pick.WR 29 in PPG his rookie season and WR 17 in PPG last season. The arrow is pointing up for Ridley and he has a very safe floor. He won't have the overall WR1 upside that those around him like Evans and AJ Brown have, but he also has less questions.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Conner's a dicey pick, but that seems to be built into his ADP right now. If everything goes his way this season, Conner will drastically outperform where he's being drafted right now. However, we just simply don't know at this point whether or not he's going to remain healthy for all 16 games. In fact, I might bet against that happening. There may not be more of a value in all of fantasy football ADP right now than Ridley. He's connected to one of the best offenses in the NFL and he's essentially a lock to see over 115 targets if he plays all 16 games. At his current ADP, Ridley's a home run selection and has the potential of finishing the season as a WR1.

Matt Ryan has supported 2 Top 24 PPR WRs four times in his career. Amongst active QBs, only Aaron Rodgers has more seasons of supporting 2 Top 24 WRs. @ClutchFantasy He's been pegged as a potential breakout player this year on one of the pass-heaviest offense in the league. Weeks 1-14 last season, he was the WR14 overall. @SWallace_FF

Getting out targeted by Austin Hooper in the same amount of games can't feel great. Has been a TD king up to this point. My only small worry for guys like Ridley and McLaurin. They come out as seniors, basically fully developed, and we expect them to continue taking large steps forward when they most likely came out of college as more of a finished product, near their ceiling. However, now that Hooper has left, I would expect a better season, just based on target volume.

Talented grinder, great scheme, and somehow avoided any major competition this offseason despite making it through a grand total of 2 games in 2019. While I have 0 faith in his ability to stay healthy, Conner has all the makings of a major RB1 for however long he lasts.

Conner went from 1,470 yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns in 2018 to 715 yards from scrimmage and 7 touchdowns in 2019. The big issue for me is durability, Conner has RB1 talent, but missed 3 games in 2018 and 6 games last year. He has a lot of upside due to his ability, but a lot of downside due to his durability.Ridley was solid with 900 yards from scrimmage and 7 touchdowns, but he needs to work on consistency to be more than a WR3.
