After finishing tied for third among NFL players in receiving touchdowns while leading the league with an average of 18.0 yards per reception in 2017, Jones was limited by a knee injury to nine games in 2018. With Darrell Bevell replacing Jim Bob Cooter as the Lions' offensive coordinator, Jones finished '19 tied for fourth in TD receptions despite missing the season's final three games.Samuel failed to surpass five receptions in any game last season, and a 91-yard effort in Week 2 marked the only time he eclipsed 70 receiving yards. With Carolina signing Robby Anderson in March to a two-year, 20 million contract, it's no guarantee that Samuel remains the third option in the Panthers' passing game behind Christian McCaffrey and D.J. Moore.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Marvin Jones remains amazing value as the Lions WR2 is available in the 9th round of drafts despite showing massive upside with Matthew Stafford fit. While injuries will remain an issue for the aging WR, he has little competition for the job and is a lot closer to Golladay in opportunity than most realize.Curtis Samuel was everyone's favorite breakout prospect last season and although he didn't reach the lofty expectations some had for him, a WR36 finish was still solid for a player with a limited skill set. With the addition of Robby Anderson, Samuel's target share is in for a major reduction and the talk he may be on the trade block is an even worse sign. While the Panthers will have to throw a lot, Samuel is at best the 4th receiver in this offense and that limits his upside.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
When doing the "Boom, Bust, and Everything In Between" series, I can't help but notice how undervalued Jones is nearly every season. The "bust" score is anything less than 8.0 PPR points. Jones busted just 23.1 percent in 2019, the 22nd lowest mark among wide receivers. He was at just 22.2 percent in 2018, the 25th lowest mark. And lastly, he was at just 18.8 percent in 2017, the ninth-lowest mark. Meanwhile, he'll give you big games here and there while not completely tanking your team. If you want to wait at wide receiver in your draft and play him as your WR3, it's not that bad. There are a lot of analysts making excuses for Samuel's poor production last year, stating that his quarterback play was atrocious. While I don't disagree, there are plenty of wide receivers who've had bad quarterback play but managed to be useful. Samuel's 0.96 yards per route run in 2019 ranked dead last among the 157 wide receivers with at least 100 targets over the last five years. Heck, his teammate D.J. Moore was able to finish as the WR18. Based on the targets Samuel received and where they took place, he should have finished as the WR16. Look, I'm not saying Samuel is as bad as he was in 2019, but for him to become a reliable fantasy player, he'd have to overcome the fact that he's now the fourth-best target in the offense, behind McCaffrey, Moore, and Anderson. The Panthers also tried shopping Samuel this offseason, but ultimately held onto him. He's someone to look at during bye weeks when the Panthers are double-digit underdogs. Outside of that, you're just looking for an injury to him to become anything more than a WR5-type option.
Elliot Berkovits
Packer Report
Year after year Jones continues to stay fantasy relevant but yet still never feels like a safe pick. He has been a boom or bust type player at times which is not something you necessarily love in terms of fantasy. He's a solid bench stash and in the right matchup he could go off, just don't expect it every week.Leading up to the 2019 season, all anyone wanted to talk about was Curtis Samuel and how he would be the WR to own in Carolina. Well, that didn't exactly work out. It was D.J. Moore who stole the spotlight and now the Panthers went out and signed deep threat Robby Anderson. I like Samuel as a talent but I don't think there will be enough targets to go around to make him a reliable weekly starter.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Jones is the poster boy for being undervalued in fantasy circles. If you look at his last 16 games, Jones has 78 catches for 1,017 yards and 11 touchdowns, comparable numbers to Kenny Golladay who is valued as a WR1. He also has the potential to be an impact fantasy player if Golladay were to get injured. Even if not, Jones's steady numbers are worthy of starting as a WR3, and he's the type of boring player who doesn't excite you during draft day, but who ultimately is an integral part of winning rosters.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Jones finished last season as a top-30 WR and he's currently being drafted as the WR39 in ADP Consensus. Jones is a solid candidate to outperform his ADP this season and he's super cheap in drafts right now. He's someone who would be a perfect WR3/FLEX option for your fantasy football roster.Samuel's got the talent to be a factor for fantasy football, but it simply hasn't translated to on-the-field production. Now, Samuel has competition for targets with Robby Anderson in town and there's a chance that Samuel is fourth on this team in targets. With that being the case, Samuel's unlikely to return consistent fantasy production this season.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
Hasn't been able to stay healthy the last 2 years but all he does is put up a 60/900/5 season every year he's healthy. A low upside flex play.If I told you this WR had 108/1236/11 would you be interested? Now what if I told you that was in 3 years? Has trended upwards for 3 years in a row. Deep targets were infamously inaccurate last year. That made him rather terrible for fantasy football. He was miscast, running a 9 route over 1/4 of the time That situation has now been rectified with the addition of Robby Anderson. I think Samuel's chances at fading into a WR3 forever are just as likely as some kind of breakout. Most players don't have a Devante Parker like resurgence after years of being mediocre. They turn into Phillip Dorsett, an 83rd percentile sparq-x athlete who had greater college production and breakout age than Samuel, while also being a 4.3 guy we just can't let go of. However, I went back to watch all his deep incomplete passes myself for 2019. The majority were inaccurate. Sometimes the QB had to release the ball early because of the rush. Others, Samuel was out positioned, or not big enough to go up and get it. He also some just flat drops, but all of those happening were in the minority of what was happening on his deep looks. Fighting for targets underneath with DJ Moore will be no easier than trying to catch deep passes from Kyle Allen, but he'll at least have more accurate balls coming from Teddy Bridgewater, while having great, to elite numbers against man coverage 2 years in a row to give himself a great opportunity in this new offense.

After Cam Newton was injured, Panthers WRs saw a catchable deep ball on only 25% of targets (14/56), via PFF. During Teddy Bridgewater's five starts, Saints WRs saw catchable deep balls on 62% of targets (8/13). @pat_thorman

Was a Top-10 WR during Stafford and Driskell, with 9+ TDs in 3 straight years. Perennially disrespected.Joe Brady preaches speed and getting it in space... and Curtis Samuel might just be the perfect man for the job. Back aboard the hype train, even with Robby A added.
