David Montgomery's groin injury on August 27th left him with a timetable of 2-4 weeks. The front end of that timetable puts him on the field in Week 1. Montgomery's rookie season was a bit disappointing, but he's easily the cheapest ticket to 250+ touches in drafts right now. The offensive line is expected to improve in Chicago and while the quarterback situation is still a mess, we saw Jordan Howard produce very solid fantasy value with this team. Montgomery has more upside than most believe.Detroit has had minimal success running the football recently and their rushing offense has been below-average for the past two decades after Barry Sanders retired. Over the past five years, the Lions have spent 2nd-round picks on Ameer Abdullah and Kerryon Johnson, neither of whom panned out. The team will be hoping Swift proves that the third time really is the charm and long-term his talent gives him tremendous potential. This season, though, with Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson both on the roster, I'm not sure if Swift will ever get enough work to be a startable fantasy asset. He certainly has upside if things break his way, though.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
From a fantasy perspective, very few backs in the NFL are going to see the type of workload that Montgomery will in 2020. This offense should be much improved from its 2019 version and Montgomery's a screaming value at his current ADP.Swift now receives a significant downgrade after the signing of Adrian Peterson. This is going to be a full-on committee backfield and Swift is dealing with his own potential injury issues right now. This may just be a backfield that you look to avoid for fantasy football this season unless we see one of these other options miss time.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Montgomery had a rough 2019 season, but there are plenty of reasons to expect him to be much better in 2020. He has no real competition for carries, he was used heavily within the 10-yard line last year, and the entire Chicago offense should be better either because Mitch Trubisky improves or the team benches him eventually for Nick Foles. Although his season-long outlook is good, he suffered a groin injury in camp and is expected to miss 2-to-4 weeks, putting Week 1 in jeopardy. Unless the Bears sign another running back of significance, however, you can draft Montgomery and expect him to be back at full strength shortly after the start of the season. Take the draft day discount, however, and target him more as a mid-tier Flex play. The draft capital the Lions spent on Swift suggested that he'd take the lion's share of the running back touches in Detroit even with the presence of Adrian Peterson. But Swift has battled injury and missed two weeks of practice heading into the season, and word is that the Detroit coaching staff preferred a committee approach to the backfield. With the Lions now signing Adrian Peterson, it's hard to see Swift getting a big workload early on even if he is healthy. He'll likely eventually be the back you want to roster in Detroit and should certainly be drafted as a low-end Flex play, but be prepared to ride with other options for the first several weeks of the season.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
There's only one direction for Montgomery and the Bears offense to go this year, right? They didn't address the offensive line as aggressive as I thought they would, but Mongtomery's role is safe as the only running back on the roster capable of handling 15-plus carries per game. It's also worth noting that despite not starting right out of the gate, Montgomery ranked sixth in the NFL for carries inside the five-yard-line. He may be a low-end RB2, but he's still an RB2 who's locked into 15-plus touches per game. Some were automatically assuming that Swift will get 20 touches per game in the Lions offense, though I wasn't a part of that group. Kerryon Johnson has been solid for the Lions when on the field, though he's had issues staying on the field, and the Lions continually bring guys like LeGarrette Blount, C.J. Anderson, and Bo Scarbrough into the fold. This time, it's Adrian Peterson. So, they'll likely work both running backs to keep them healthy and fresh. I do believe Swift is the best back, hence the higher ranking, but expecting more than 12-14 touches per game out of the gate would be a mistake.
Draft Engine
Draft Engine
Built like a tank, Montgomery runs with violence in tight quarters. He thrashes his way through arm tackles, which helps make him a surprisingly effective short-yardage runner. In the open field, he too often gets chased down from behind. A groin strain leaves his Week 1 status in doubt, but once healthy, he'll be Chicago's main ball-carrier.Swift comes into the NFL as a polished product. His workload was kept in check due to the depth in Georgia's backfield, and there's a question of what kind of workload he can ultimately handle for the Lions - he never had 200 carries in a single season.
Elisha Twerski

Montgomery failed to reach double-digit fantasy points in half-PPR formats in 10 of his 16 games last year. On average, he finished as the RB32. That's...not great.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Bears RB David Montgomery is expected to miss 2-4 weeks. This timeline butts him up against Chicago's season opener versus Detroit. Fantasy players should at the very least prepare for Montgomery to sit (or be limited) in Week 1, adding viable spot-start FLEX options in the later rounds to ensure a serviceable starting lineup out the gates. Montgomery was a virtual LOCK for 240 carries. There have been 125 running backs who've hit that mark over the last 10 years. Guess how many of them finished worse than RB25? None. @MikeTagliereNFLLions RB D'Andre Swift's leg injury "could cost him snaps" to start the season. "I think missing time in general, with rookies, is a concern," coach Matt Patricia said. "We're going to have to do a good job of making sure he's acclimated when he is ready to go. Kind of work him in that way until we build up a little background for him where he knows maybe what he's going to see." @Rotoworld
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
It was a difficult 2019 for the Bears but it's very hard to pin the blame on David Montgomery. While he failed to do anything special (see his bizarrely low yards after contact), the whole offense was a disaster and gave him nothing to work with. The volume with remain and he's got solid RB2 potential, especially in non-PPR. Just understand you don't have a potential stud on your hands here, simpy a solid provider. What a mess the Lions backfield was in 2019; Kerryon Johnson, Bo Scarborough, Ty Johnson, JD McKissic, CJ Anderson, Paul Perkins, Tra Carson and Wes Hills all started a game with Hills oddly the overall RB9 in PPG bizarrely. Into this nightmare walks D'Andre Swift. The shining light at the end of the tunnel is that the run offense was actually pretty good at times and if Swift is able to earn enough volume, he's got RB1 upside. Sadly, that's unlikely to occur as it projects as the committee approach Matt Patricia seems to favour and that limits Swift's upside significantly. If things break right he may provide big value later in the season but it'll start off very messy so be warned.

Sophomore leap potentially coming. Fate tied to Trubisky and the Bears ability to find an identity on offenseBig time sleeper in the middle rounds if Detroit commits to him. Patricia is a Patriot product, so multiple backs is the more likely scenario.

The volume is there, the weather is right, but who is the quarterback back again? DMO is overlooked but don't be afraid to pick him up. He will handle the 15-20 carries a game and is locked in for goalline situations.

Was very inefficient as a rookie, but saw good opportunity. Was 13th in rush attempts and if he has a jump in efficiency he could be a value.Workhorse RB prospect with strong draft capital. Profiles as a top RB in the game in a few seasons. Lions were a top offense when Stafford was healthy last year. If he can beat out Kerryon for lead work there is tons of upside here.

Montgomery wasn't all too impressive as a rookie totaling 889 rushing yards and six TDs. The issue with Montgomery was his efficiency as he averaged only 3.7 ypc. Additionally, he only saw 35 targets in 2019 which downgrades him in PPR formats.Swift is one of the most electrifying players coming out of the 2020 draft class. His only roadblock is the fact that he ended up on the Lions. The Lions offense has been notoriously bad for RBs for years and he'll have to compete with Kerryon Johnson for touches. That being said, Johnson hasn't been able to stay healthy and if anything were to happen to him, Swift would skyrocket in everyone's rankings.

Monty had 267 touches last season and the Bears did nothing this off-season to suggest that that number will lessen at any point. They even brought in Nick Foles hoping for an upgrade in QB play. I don't love the player and he was awful on an efficiency basis last season, but if he could fall into the endzone a few more times this season than we could be looking at a MelGo type second-year performance.

Montgomery had 1074 yards from scrimmage and 7 touchdowns in 2019, but QB Mitchell Trubisky must improve or Nick Foles must be an upgrade for Montgomery to build on last season.Swift should start the season as the Lions top running back and the Lions did have the 11th ranked offensive line by Pro Football Focus last year. Swift has a chance to be a flex RB with RB2 upside.

Like Le'Veon, Monty has the workload if not a great environment or transcendent talent, but there's hope that new QB Foles will be an upgrade for the offense

267 touches in 2019 were 12th among RBs. Nagy went from 6th in attempts in 2018(468), to 20th(395). I guess that happens when you aren't winning most games. He was still avoiding tackles at a high rate, much like college. Was 8th in the league with 47. However, PFF rated him as the 60th most elusive RB. What's the point of avoiding tackles if you have 10th percentile burst? 78% of top 12 RBs the last 3 years have received at least 250 touches. He obviously failed to reach top 12 with that amount last year but hard to see him not getting a similar workload in 2020 and another shot at it.
