Sleepers and Busts
With Fitz Magic departing to D.C., Tua finally gets his shot. The addition of former college teammate and speed demon Jaylen Waddle will help. However, losing a mentor like Fitzpatrick will not. The two were close and he was a great teacher for Tua to learn from. Tua's injury history is probably my biggest concern. Can he survive a 17 game season? The AFC East has some tough defenses too. I love his talent though. Tua has the mobility to extend plays, which many other fantasy options in the QB2 range do not.The Giants gave him some new toys in Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney, but the offensive line is still a mess. In addition, Saquon Barkley is coming off a devastating knee injury. It's a make or break year for Jones. My money is on break. Avoid.
Kevin Wheeler
The Draft Zone
Tua is without potential starteting WRs Will Fuller, DeVante Parker, and Preston Williams. Starting TE Mike Gesicki also out today. This was his best practice of camp so far. Tua is one of my favorite breakout candidates.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
It was a perfect storm for Tua last year that caused people to question his abilities. Tua was still coming off of a brutal injury, it was a shortened off-season, his receiving corps was underwhelming and dealing with injury, and Justin Herbert outperforming him certainly didn't help. Heading into year two, Tua now has a revamped receiving corps to throw to that fits his skillset perfectly and he's had the full off-season to prepare as the starter. We're not at the point where we can rely on Tua as a weekly starter, but let's not forget what Tua can do when he's healthy and has a solid arsenal of receiving weapons. He's certainly on the streaming radar as we head into 2021.Jones had 11 touchdowns last season and 10 interceptions. Yikes. While his receiving corps was in and out of the lineup with injuries, those numbers simply are not acceptable for a NFL QB. Heading into 2021, Jones now has a loaded arsenal of receiving weapons that should help take the pressure off, but we simply have no idea whether or not Jones can rise to the occasion. As a QB2 in Superflex formats, he's fine to take a shot on to see if the receiving corps helps. However, he should not be viewed as anything more than a streaming QB that you can roll out only in plus matchups.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
It's really unfair to judge Tagovailoa after a pretty weak rookie season, as he dealt with an injury throughout the offseason, had no preseason, and plenty of injuries to his pass catchers. On top of that, he had Ryan Fitzpatrick breathing down his neck. Fast forward to 2021 where Fitzpatrick is gone, and the Dolphins have added Will Fuller and Jaylen Waddle to his stable of pass catchers. If his injuries really limited him in 2020, we could see an explosion in 2021 with the firepower they have at wide receiver, but don't automatically assume that. When you throw 11 touchdowns in 14 games in today's NFL, that's a problem. Sure, Jones didn't have top-tier pass catchers last year, but Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton, and Golden Tate were competent. The Giants seem to believe Jones was simply lacking weapons, so they went out and signed Kenny Golladay and Kyle Rudolph, and then drafted Kadarius Toney in the first round. Based on what we've seen from Jones to this point, it's tough saying he's anything more than a boom-or-bust quarterback who'll need some rushing totals in order to make him streamer-worthy.
Brendan Tuma
FantasyPros
It feels as if we all overcorrected our Tua assessment following his small-sample rookie season. It's vital to remember that Tagovailoa was coming off a brutal hip injury without a proper offseason. Furthermore, OC Chan Gailey designed the offense for longtime colleague Ryan Fitzpatrick. The scheme when Tua played was ultra conservative, which led to concerns about the Dolphins' assessment of their No. 5 overall selection. The organization then spent this past spring building AROUND Tagovailoa. Cameron Wolfe of ESPN wrote this summer that the second-year QB turned introspective, embraced his Year 1 struggles, and spent spring practices trying to correct them. Tua isn't a start-worthy option in 1QB redraft leagues, but he has upside in SuperFlex leagues as well as best-ball contests.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
Jones had 423 yards rushing and 1 rushing touchdown last year, but his passing numbers were among the worst in the league. He does have a much stronger supporting cast this year and he should be a QB2 with upside.
Tim Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
I'm not ready to bury Tua in the dirt, but after a bad rookie season and reports of struggles with INTs in camp, he is going to have to righten the ship quickly in order to be fantasy-relevant this season. The Dolphins have surrounded him with speed on the outside so the second-year leap could be in the cards, but it's hard to count on it after watching him play in 2020.It is put up or shut up time for Daniel Jones after getting some new weapons. If this does truly unlock Jones' potential, he could be a good dart throw late in drafts.
Joe Pisapia
FantasyPros
Tua Tagovailoa's debut was not stellar in 2020. Between significant hip surgery, no OTA's, no preseason, and a QB controversy in his locker room, it's a wonder he could do anything productive on the field. However, the Dolphins continued to build the right way and added WR Will Fuller on a one-year "show me" deal and WR Jaylen Waddle via the draft. Tua has the weapons and an entire offseason to reach his potential in 2021. He's a ferocious competitor and an intelligent QB. He just needs some time to get his feet under him. In 9 starts, he threw for just 11 TDs, but the new weapons will open up the field more for the young QB. He remains a perfect buy low in Superflex dynasty leagues. In redraft formats, he could be a decent mid-range QB2. Tua's is a work in progress, but one that still carries more potential than some want to acknowledge.Daniel Jones is a turnover machine. In the 27 NFL games he's played in, Jones has 29 fumbles and 22 INTs. The one crutch is that when Saquon Barkley is healthy, he's been a better version of himself statistically. A healthy run game goes a long way for any QB, but Wayne Gallman had some strong games last year, while Jones continued to spiral. The Giants offensive line is still nothing to write home about. The curious mish-mosh of WR receiver additions year over year (Kenny Golladay, John Ross, Kadarius Toney) have set Jones up for a situation where it all doesn't come together, the Giants (and all of their massive 2022 draft capital) will be selecting another QB. Last year, the Broncos created a similar situation surrounding QB Drew Lock with so much talent it appeared "too big to fail," but it failed nonetheless. This may be the end for Daniel Jones.
Wolf of Roto Street
Roto Street Journal
Has the arm, and with Fuller & Waddle outside, has the talent too. Will they unleash Tua and let him sling?
