FantasyPros
The Texans gave their running backs 397 touches last year, and that was with DeAndre Hopkins on the roster. That's a lot of work. The only running back they've added was David Johnson. While Johnson looked horrendous down the stretch, it's possible he just tried to work his way back from injury way too soon. It appears Bill O'Brien isn't convinced that Johnson is done with his NFL career, like some. It's possible that he's not as electric as he once was, but guys, the Texans gave Carlos Hyde (who's still unemployed) 255 touches last year. Opportunity is key in fantasy football, and Johnson appears to be in line for a lot of it in 2020, making him a low-end RB2 with upside for more should he actually be healthy. Not many expecting Ingram to finish as an RB1 with Lamar Jackson under center, thinking he'd lose some of the goal-line carries to the mobile quarteback. Despite the fact that Ingram had more than 15 carries just twice all season, he finished as the No. 8 running back. We aren't banking on that happening again, especially when the Ravens drafted JK Dobbins in the second round of the NFL Draft. Ingram is going to be 31 years old this year, while Dobbins and Justice Hill have young, fresh legs. We could see Ingram lose a few carries a game, but provided he's healthy, we should still expect him to lead this timeshare and be a borderline RB2.
Brandon Funston
The Athletic
If his health holds, his share of the HOU backfield workload should be major, but his potential in the passing game far outweighs his ground game at this point in careerSeeing him go mid-20s at RB in many drafts, which is silly - BAL offense is a juggernaut and Ingram likely to see 220+ touches and lucrative goal line work yet again
Elliot Berkovits
Pack to the Future
After a horrid finish to the 2019 season, many fantasy players seem to be avoiding David Johnson. What people are forgetting is that prior to his injury last year, Johnson was the 6th highest scoring RB with an average of over 17 points per game. Now he joins another high-flying offense in Houston and should be in a great spot to outperform his current ADP.Once again, Mark Ingram finds himself in a crowded backfield in Baltimore after the addition of rookie JK Dobbins. That being said, with no preseason games to be played, I don't expect Dobbins to be a factor early in the season which should give Ingram an opportunity to take control fo the lead role in Baltimore. How long he holds onto it is the question.
Michael Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
I am COMPLETELY off of DJ this season. He has been a below average or injured back every year since 2016. I repeat, 2016. If you want to bet on a running back renaissance after three years of mediocrity, so be it, I will not be taking that bet.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
I do not think we will ever see 2016 David Johnson again. He joins a new team this year and he is now the lead back in the Texans offense and that should be an upgrade from RB Carlos Hyde. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should be a RB2 with some upside.Ingram had a great first year in Baltimore with 1,265 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns. The addition of J.K. Dobbins has a chance to hurt his fantasy value this year, making Ingram more of a RB2.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Johnson's now joining the Houston Texans and there is a huge workload waiting for him. If he can stay healthy, Johnson should easily return value this season. However, the last time that we saw Johnson, he looked like a shell of his former self. Additionally, Johnson's true fantasy value has come through his contributions in the receiving game. In Houston, with Duke Johnson also on this roster, it's difficult to see David Johnson seeing significant volume. If you draft David Johnson this year, you're betting on him staying fully healthy and him seeing a ton of work in the receiving game. Otherwise, he may go down as a wasted pick when it's all said and done.Ingram is going to be splitting this backfield with JK Dobbins this season, but he should still be the lead back. There are plenty of fantasy points for the running backs to go around in this offense though and Ingram is a fantastic selection at his current ADP.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
Will be taking advantage of his 1 highly publicized run while injured in 2019, of him trying to run around the corner at the speed of your grandpa while injured. Expecting amazing health? Not necessarily, but we've seen what a 1 dimensional, rather bland back can do with the reigns, in Carlos Hyde, in 2019. I'll gladly scoop Johnson as my RB3Back to back years as the number 1 rushing team. 15 TDs are unlikely to repeat but all the pieces are returning on offense. Should be able to retain RB2 value for 1 more year IF he can hold off Dobbins. There's a chance the timeshare becomes more lopsided by the end of the year.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
Bill O'Brien has a long history of leaning on (often mediocre) running backs for 220-270 carries. Arian Foster, Alfred Blue, Lamar Miller and Carlos Hyde all became somewhat fantasy relevant in this offence and David Johnson is next on the list. The real question is how he fits in the passing game and that will make all the difference. The other D. Johnson, Duke, will certainly be a hindrance but we've seen DJ prove impossible to take off the field when things go right and it's just possible he explodes for a big season. I don't love the odds of that but even though this is very must Deshaun Watson's offence, I do think David Johnson has a very solid floor and provides a nice safe pick with solid upside.Mark Ingram was a shock fantasy stud in 2019, though he relied unsustainably on his 15 TDs. This included an incredible TD every five receptions. Now the supremely talented JK Dobbins joins the fun and it's scary for a guy that already had regression coming. That being said though, this offence had 596 rushes and Ingram had barely a third of them so there's plenty to go around. If the 41 RB receptions increase or the offence relies a little less on Lamar Jackson's designed runs, we may see an increase in Ingram's volume. While the offence's overall efficiency and Ingram's TD number will surely regress, there's still value here as a fourth round pick with RB1 upside.
Kevin Wheeler
Draftwize
Ingram has a 4 million dollar salary which is very reasonable and a 5.3 million dollar cap hit if cut. Hard to see them moving on from him.
