Ellis Johnson True North Fantasy Football | It's easy to dismiss how incredible Samuel's 2021 season was considering he averaged a mere 10.8 fantasy points per game in 2022. In the last three years only four receivers have had a 300+ fantasy point season, Davante Adams, Cooper Kupp, Deebo Samuel, and Justin Jefferson. Unfortunately, his role has changed since the team brought in Christian McCaffery. Although he may not have the WR-one upside anymore, he has the athletic ability to wildly outperform his current ADP. Kyle Shannahan will find a way to get him involved, making Deebo a value in 2023. | I have seen Olave ranked everywhere from in people's top-seven to outside their top 20. Regardless of where people rank him, one thing is clear, people expect him to take a step forward. In his rookie season, a common thought is that Olave was limited by Andy Dalton and his 66% catchable targets. Although it appeared to be true, Derek Carr's top option Davante Adams last season had only 60% catchable targets. The biggest difference will be that hopefully the volume increases and Olave as a player can take a step forward. However, these are two big asks for me, so I have him as a mid-WR-two and I am excited to see what he can do. |
Mark Ringo Sleepers and Busts | I'm trying to figure out why Deebo's ADP is so high, and I still can't figure it out. He's two years removed from handling the RB duties. Last year I cautioned folks that it appeared his RB role was more a product of necessity due to the onslaught of injuries at RB than by design. Coach Shanahan confirmed it. The thing is, that's where Deebo separated himself from other WRs, at least as far as his fantasy prospects go. With Christian McCaffrey, Elijah Mitchell, and possibly Trey Lance healthy, that ship appears to have sailed far from San Francisco Bay. Samuel's current ADP at WR 18 is way too expensive and risky for Mark Ringo. Bust
Andrew Erickson FantasyPros | Chris Olave ended his strong rookie season 8th in total air yards (1,531) while commanding a 25% target share and 10th-ranked air yards share (38%). He was the WR26 in points per game (11.0), 6th in yards per route run (2.42) and 8th in target rate per route run (28%). One of the most efficient seasons we have ever seen from a rookie WR. His downfield skill set and per-route efficiency will gel extremely well with his new quarterback, Derek Carr, in 2023. Olave is also a prime candidate to experience positive TD regression after finishing as just one of three WRs with 1,000 receiving yards to score fewer than 5 TDs.
Derek Brown FantasyPros | Without his "wide back" role and with the 49ers bottling him up as a check-down specialist again, Deebo Samuel struggled to a WR28 finish in 2022. He still drew a strong share of the 49ers' passing offense with a 25.4% target share (19th), but his aDOT was 4.2 (102nd), and he only saw five deep targets (108th) and 12 red zone looks (36th). Without the rushing equity and high-leverage roles to help pad his fantasy production, Samuel dissolved into a WR3. With the quarterback situation remaining unsettled in San Francisco in 2023 and the onus remaining on running the ball, Samuel will likely disappoint if you're counting on WR2 production. | Chris Olave had a magnificent rookie season as a target vacuuming wide receiver with alpha potential. Olave finished as the WR25 in fantasy points per game, which doesn't do any justice to his sparkling efficiency metrics. Olave was 15th in target share (26.7%), third in air yard share (40.8%), and tenth in target per route run rate (29.3%). He was seventh in open rate (ESPN analytics), immediately behind Stefon Diggs, and tenth in yards per route run. With Michael Thomas back, Olave will fight Thomas tooth and nail for the WR1 role in this offense. If he can improve on his 11 red zone targets (40th) and four total touchdowns (37th), he could easily finish as a WR1 in 2023. |
Brandon Funston The Athletic | Health, revolving QBs, positional identity crisis were at play in 2022 - fro 2023, bet on his talent, and head coach Shanahan tweaking things to better deploy them | Was WR25 in fantasy as a rookie, and like former college teammate Garrett Wilson, hard not to be optimistic about the QB upgrade for Year 2 |
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Samuel was not quite the same player in 2022 as he was in 2021. He missed 4 fantasy games with injury and with a revolving door at QB, finished with 54 receptions for 612 yards, 41 rushing attempts for 228 yards, and 5 TDs. Samuel is still a very explosive receiver, but with his rushing attempts being limited with Christian McCaffrey in the backfield, Samuel is more of a WR2 in 2023 than the WR1 he was in 2021. | Olave had 67 receptions for 982 yards and 3 TDs, despite playing with Andy Dalton for the majority of the season. Olave is on the cusp of being an elite WR1 with the addition of Derek Carr to the offense. |
Wolf of Roto Street Roto Street Journal | Purdy being the starter would be a boost to all pass-catchers here, Deebo included | 3/7: Should only benefit from Carr, even though he's more of a check-down guy he can sling it. Better than Dalton at least! |
