Ellis Johnson True North Fantasy Football | Despite only playing 22 full games in his three seasons in the league, Dobbins still has support from the fantasy community. He's a tough back to the project as the team is expected to be more reliant on the passing game, and Dobbins only has 25 career receptions. Even without his passing work, he is the lead back on a dynamic team. Despite Lamar Jackson potentially stealing goalline opportunities, he should see enough opportunity to be a steady RB-two for fantasy. | One of the biggest mysteries from last season was why Cam Akers was on track to be released by the team and still managed to finish as the team's lead back. No one knows exactly what caused these reports, however, it seems clear that Akers is their lead guy for this year. This off-season the team brought in Zach Evans in the sixth round and will have Kyren Williams returning from injury. Although still unproven, it's important to not forget that 2022 fifth-round draft pick Williams, was speculated to have a large role last season. However, if Akers is only competition is a fifth and sixth-round pick, he should dominate touches. I'm skeptical of the teams' ability to move the offense consistently, pushing him down my rankings. |
Mark Ringo Sleepers and Busts | Last year Dobbins was coming off reconstructive knee surgery. It didn't go well. He wasn't ready. This year should go better. His body has had time to heal. in addition, the Ravens' offense should be more explosive. A healthy Lamar Jackson along with newcomers Odell Beckham and Zay Flowers can all flat-out fly. They could propel Baltimore's offense to a whole new level. The con of Lamar is he doesn't throw it to his RBs much. He doesn't have to. Lamar is so elusive, he just takes off and runs. Jackson also vultures a few TDs. The other concern is Gus Edwards. He's 238 lbs. He had six TDs in 2020. He could vulture some too. Those factors limit Dobbins' upside. Currently, Dobbins's ADP at RB 18 is a bit high, but not outrageous considering the firepower Baltimore has. Remember, the J.K. either stands for just keep expectations reasonable or just keep telling those awful jokes Ringo haha! Probably the latter haha! | Cam attempted to come back from one of the toughest injuries for athletes to overcome, the dreaded torn Achilles. Those are career-enders. Akers is still playing but I doubt he's the same player he was before the tragic injury. I'm hoping for the best, but fearing the worst. The Rams' offensive line won't give him much help. They struggled mightily last year. And without high draft picks, they were unable to upgrade it. As if that weren't enough obstacles to overcome, I have major concerns about Matthew Stafford's ability to make it through the season. Last December here's what Michael Lombardi, former NFL executive spoke about Matthew Stafford's health on his podcast, "The GM Shuffle". "There's a good chance, I would say better than 70% that Matthew Stafford doesn't play next year. I have a sense that...it's more than a hunch, it's talking to people in the league that maybe Stafford's body is breaking down." After seeing that statement from Michael Lombardi, unless those opinions have changed, the thought of drafting or ranking ANY Rams offensive player high scares the living hell out of me. Lombardi is pretty dialed in when it comes to news in the league. Akers' current ADP at RB 22 is way too risky for Mark Ringo. There are ominous signs in Los Angeles. Bust |
Brandon Funston The Athletic | Just 8 games in 2022 coming off brutal knee injury, but he closed in exciting fashion, with 7.0 YPC and 100 yards per game in his final 4 contests | Slow out of gates in 2022 in return from Achilles injury, but left a great last impression with Top 4 RB returns from Weeks 13-18 |
Wolf of Roto Street Roto Street Journal | 5/5: No competition added, offense should be significantly more explosive w/ Todd Monken + Lamar back with new weaponry. Big big winner of the offseason after tearing it up, even though clearly not with his final gear, to close last season Bet he pushes for 2023 Comeback Player of the Year. Didn't have his full gear and STILL was dominant (elite vision) once he returned from injury. | 5/5: Early offseason rumblings said the Rams planned to build around Akers. With him emerging relatively unscathed in the draft (Zach Evans in Round 5), Akers could build off his very impressive finish to 2023. If Stafford is back to health, too, the Rams could rebound in a massive way. Update 12/26: Looks like he may already BE BACK! 33 points in the Semifinals?! SHEESH! Another year removed from Achilles could be what he needs to regain form (see: D'onta Foreman). UPDATE x 2 (2/2) - THe Athletic reports the Rams "really hope to build off what Cam Akers did in Dec. & January" + the Rams don't seem likely to overhaul the backfield. New OC Mike LaFleur also likes to heavily utilize RBs in the passing game & is a descendant of the sexy Shanny Zone Scheme. All grea t news for Akers! |
Andrew Erickson FantasyPros | Coming back from major knee surgery, J.K. Dobbins' 2022 season debut was delayed until Week 3. And he posted middling results, failing to surpass 50 rushing yards or 13 carries in any game with little receiving usage to speak of (6 targets). It was revealed that Dobbins needed another knee surgery after Week 6 and he was placed on IR until Week 14. It wasn't until Dobbins came back later in the year that fantasy managers got a glimpse of what the talented RB displayed as a rookie. The Ravens RB1 played in five games (including playoffs) averaging 6.6 yards per carry, 92 rushing yards, and 14 carries per game. Although he still split time with Gus Edwards - nearly identical carry totals in the Wild Card Round loss to the Bengals - and Dobbins' receiving usage remained obsolete with just 7 targets total to close out the year (5 of which came versus Cincinnati). | Cam Akers was a total zero from the get-go, getting benched in Week 1 and he looked like he was going to be outright cut by the Rams. Eventually, Akers inherited the Rams' RB1 role and he delivered as the fantasy RB4 during the last six weeks of the season. With LA in a rebuilding year, Akers will again be a truly polarizing player. Did he do enough in the final 6 weeks as the NFL's leading rusher averaging 85 rushing yards per game to retain bell-cow-type usage? The good news is that Sean McVay is remaining in Los Angeles, which bodes well for Akers to remain the go-to guy in the backfield. Recall, that Akers played 100% of the snaps in the Rams' season finale. And with so many needs on the Rams' current roster, they did not add any running backs in the draft until the sixth round. That means Akers will be competing for volume with Zach Evans, alongside Day 3 scrubs Kyren Williams and Ronnie Rivers. And although it seems impossible considering his career arc, Akers isn't even 24 years old yet. With free agency on the horizon, the Rams have all the reason in the world to ride Akers into the ground during a contract year. |
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Dobbins played in only 8 games during the fantasy season, finishing with 520 yards rushing, 42 yards receiving, and 3 TDs. He should be more consistent a year removed from his knee injury, making him a low-end RB2 to flex option, depending on what happens with Lamar Jackson's contract. | Akers had a disappointing season, but he closed 2022 with three straight 100-yard games and finished with 682 rushing yards and 7 rushing touchdowns in the fantasy season. The Rams are going to be in rebuilding mode in 2023, but Akers still should have at least flex value with upside. |
