Ellis Johnson True North Fantasy Football | Honestly, I'm skeptical of Fields' passing attack. Despite my love for Lamar and his passing ability, I have not seen enough from Fields to project that development. Although D.J. Moore helps this offense a lot, his rushing ability is what ranks him here. The real question is can he pull a Hurts and have double-digit rushing touchdowns? If he does he's elite, because I struggle to see him surpassing the 20-passing TD mark. | After a disappointing 2022 campaign, I'm projecting a massive bounce back for the young gun-slinger. With the addition of first-round WR Quintin Johnson, alongside Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, and Gerald Everett, his weapons rival any offense. Now with Kellend Moore calling the shots, his passing game should spike in efficiency and volume compared to last year. |
Mark Ringo Sleepers and Busts | Last year I had Justin Fields on my bust list. Yeah, that turned out well haha! Note in 2021 Mark Ringo ranked 203 out of like 230 analysts in the Fantasy Pros Draft Accuracy Contest! Hey, anyone can finish first, it takes real talent to be that awful at ranking players haha! What can I say, I'm a natural haha! Anyway, I digress, speaking of talent, it wasn't that I thought Fields lacked talent. It was because of the situation he was in. New coaching staff, a new playbook, and a terrible offensive line. I thought he'd be running for his life. I was at least right about that. I was wrong in that no one caught him and he didn't get beaten to a pulp by 300 lb. defensive linemen haha! Anyway, the Bears' offensive line should be better in 2023. They signed Nate Davis in free agency and then took promising young rookie Darnell Wright in the 1st round of the draft. Wright stonewalled Crimson Tide star DE Will Anderson when Tennessee played Alabama last season. One thing about Fields, he is very accurate. He needs to improve his blitz recognition and get the ball out quicker though. (Trivia question, who was the last QB to throw for over 4,000 yards for the Bears? Answer- at the bottom.) The additions of D.J. Moore and Robert Tonyan should also help. Fields' current ADP is at QB 6. That's a bit high for me. I like a few other QBs better. I'd expect Fields' rushing attempts to go down. If that happens, he'll need to make up the difference by passing for more yards and TDs. We shall see. Answer- Never. It would have been Mark Ringo, but he's too busy contending for titles in fantasy football accuracy contests haha! | Herbert was hurt last year. He took a beating. He's healthy now and should bounce back to his old self. The Chargers also added Quentin Johnston to bolster their WR room. He adds some size and speed. They also changed their offensive coordinator. Kellen Moore comes over from Dallas. There should be plenty of shootouts in the AFC West. I expect Justin Herbert to be a big part of them. He's fairly valued right now. Herbert's current ADP is QB 7. I think the time off will help him "recharge his batteries" in 2023 haha! Where's NBC at? I should have my own sit-com with lame jokes like that haha! The Mark Ringo Show. We'll be right back after these messages from our sponsors haha! Bounce Back Candidate |
Wolf of Roto Street Roto Street Journal | 3/17: Now with an elite WR1 in DJ Moore, Fields is every bit the cheat code of the Allen, Mahomes, Hurts tier, with a 1-2 Round discount | 5/4: Keenan is going nowhere, Quentin Johnston is back, and Kellen Moore is the BEST possible OC Hire. Loves to sling deep, commanded Top-2 attacks for the majority of his playcalling time in DAL. A beautiful offseason for a massive rebound year for Herbert. |
Pat Fitzmaurice FantasyPros | Justin Fields was electric as a runner in 2022. If he can significantly boost his passing numbers in 2023, look out. Fields ran for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns last season, averaging a league-high 7.1 yards per carry. He ran for 178 yards and a touchdown against the Dolphins in Week 9, breaking the single-game rushing record for a quarterback -- then ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns against the Lions the following week. But Fields averaged 149.5 passing yards per game and topped the 200-yard mark only twice in 2022. In his defense, Fields was saddled by a mediocre offensive line and arguably the worst WR group in the league. The Bears have already traded for WR D.J. Moore and figure to bolster their offensive line in the NFL Draft, giving Fields a chance to make the same sort of quantum leap that Jalen Hurts made in 2022. | Justin Herbert has abundant arm talent and the mobility to add rushing value, so fantasy managers were expecting him to take another step forward last season in his third year as a starter. Instead, Herbert took a step backward, with significant declines in his yardage per game, yardage per attempt and touchdown rate. He ran for only 147 yards and didn't have a single TD run. In Herbert's defense, he gutted it out through a rib cartilage fracture sustained in an early-season Thursday-night game vs. the Chiefs, and Herbert's top two receivers, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, both missed time with injuries. The Chargers have jettisoned oft-criticized offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, replacing him with Kellen Moore. Herbert remains one of the toolsiest quarterbacks in the league and will likely produce much-improved fantasy numbers in 2023. |
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Fields threw the ball only 318 times and finished with just 2,242 yards passing and 17 passing TDs. His fantasy appeal was as a runner, he torched the NFL for 1,143 yards rushing and 8 rushing TDs. If he tallies that much rushing production, he will be a fantastic QB1 in 2023. He also should have better passing numbers with the addition of D.J. Moore. | Herbert's 4,739 passing yards were fantastic, but his 25 TD passes were a little lower than fantasy managers had hoped for entering the year. He is still a very solid QB1, but probably not in the very elite tier. |
Tera Roberts Dynasty Vipers | Yes, the huge stretch where he put up insane numbers was against horrible defenses. But Fields had strong performances against NE, DAL and PHI - all tough defenses. Weekly 20-30 points is well within his range of outcomes. I am willing to reach on Fields to acquire him similarly to Jalen Hurts in 2022. | Herbert was not Herbert in 2022 - injuries to weapons, bad coaching, rib injury. He could easily turn this around and return to his 2021 form averaging 23.3 ppg...but at his best that's more of a #5 QB with the amount of rushing QBs that have upped their game. They will have a new offensive scheme this year and his weapons are still older with injury concerns. I'm not drafting him at his ceiling. |
