Sleepers and Busts
Many criticized the Lions for reaching and drafting Gibbs in the 1st round. They argued that picking a RB in the 1st round wasn't good value. And if you view Gibbs solely as a RB, then the argument makes sense. However, Gibbs is much more than a RB. He's a weapon. Gibbs is electric with the ball in his hands. He's fast. He ran a 4.36 forty! He can take it the distance from anywhere on the field. However, he is also undersized at 5'9" 201 lbs. He'll wear down if given short yardage./goal-line duties. He works best in space. Because of that, I think he's best looked at as an all-purpose weapon. Detroit would be smart to use Gibbs at WR instead of a RB imo. They'll also probably use him to return kickoffs and punts. And it sounds like that's exactly what they're going to do. According to Gibbs, "They're planning to use me almost as they did at Alabama. Probably a little more at wideout and stuff. Running more routes. Not just like goals, and hitches and slants and stuff. Probably more real receiver routes." If Gibbs can stay healthy, he's a value right now with a current ADP of RB 19 on a Detroit team that should pass the ball a lot in 2023. I expect his ADP to rise as the season approaches. So, I'm calling it now. I've got dibbs on Gibbs haha! Ringo's comp- a slightly slower version of Tyreek Hill.

Given draft capital expended, DET likely to give him more than D'Andre Swift work - perhaps a crack at some of those vacated 17 Jamaal Williams TDs

5/7: Team could not have been any more excited to land Gibbs, who's already being moved around to the slot & out wide in early Lions' practices. Montgomery will be an annoying TD hog, but Gibbs is talented enough to get his as a receiver & big-play artist behind a great line & within a Top-8 offense5/5: D'Andre Swift arrives and should immediately usurp the less-talented Gainwell for the main receiving back role 3/17: Miles Sanders is gone, and Rashaad Penny is a walking injury. Gainwell could be the featured back Flashed his explosiveness throughout the playoffs + Miles Sanders is now a UFA. Could explode in value depending on how this backfield shakes out this offseason
Andrew Erickson
FantasyPros
Jahmyr Gibbs spent his first two college seasons at Georgia Tech, posting a 24% dominator rating as the team's RB1 alongside future NFL running back, Jordan Mason. In both his years at Georgia Tech, Gibbs finished second in PFF receiving grade. However, he elected to not stay at GT for his junior year and instead transferred to Alabama to be the Crimson Tide's next RB1. He led Alabama with 926 rushing yards and flashed receiving ability by catching a team-leading 44 passes for 444 receiving yards. Gibbs finished third in the FBS in receiving yards, one year removed from leading all RBs in the nation in receiving yards (470). He also flashed his explosiveness by ending the year fifth in the class in PFF's breakaway run rate (53%). At 5-foot-9 and 199 pounds, Gibbs is on the smaller size for an every-down role. But he more than makes up for it with his receiving and speed. And the Detroit Lions hardly seem concerned about his size, considering they selected him 12th overall in the NFL Draft. The draft capital alone mitigates any workload concerns for Gibbs based on his somewhat smaller frame. Detroit paid a premium, and that means he is going to get his touches (likely high value in the form of receptions) regardless of what the team paid David Montgomery during free agency. Last season ex-Lions and newly acquired Eagles running back D'Andre Swift was uber-efficient on a per-touch basis: fourth in fantasy points per touch, third in yards per carry, 23rd in points per game and 19th in yards after contact per attempt. Swift (10.3) and Jamaal Williams (16.1) combined for 26.4 touches per game. Even with a projected 50-50 split, Gibbs is looking at a 224-touch workload. With a 55% split, Gibbs is flirting with nearly 250 total touches over a 17-game season. Simply put, the former Alabama running back needs to be ranked as back-end RB1.Kenneth Gainwell was seldom used throughout the 2022 season as his passing-catching skill was not needed with the Philadelphia Eagles dominating their opponents en route to a Super Bowl 57 cameo. But his usage down the stretch should be noted as his role increased drastically. He out-targeted Miles Sanders 18-5 from Week 15 onward. And in Sanders' last five games, the early-down starter played fewer than 40% of the snaps after never playing fewer than 50% of the snaps from Weeks 1-16. Gainwell and Sanders split touches nearly 50/50 in the team's last four games, with Kenny G seeing the preferred usage on third/passing downs. With Sanders not returning to the team, Gainwell would be a favorite to see an expanded role on the ground in addition to his confirmed receiving role on offense. It's a major "if" newcomers Rashaad Penny and D'Andre Swift can actually stay healthy for a full season. And "if" they cannot (a very probable outcome) Gainwell will benefit as will Boston Scott. Gainwell is dirt cheap as the RB56 in best ball drafts.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
Gibbs is going to lose some work to David Montgomery, but the Lions will involve both running backs and Gibbs has RB2 value with upside.
