FantasyPros
Is Hockenson incredibly talented? Yes. Is there a case to be made that he can lead this Lions offense in targets? Absolutely. However, the expectations for Hockenson right now are sky high and it's hard to see how he returns value. The scoring opportunities are going to be essentially non-existent for this team and we could see them at the bottom of the league in overall plays ran. Hockenson can soak up targets this season, but if he doesn't score plenty of touchdowns, he's going to disappoint fantasy managers that drafted him as a top-5 TE. He's being drafted at his absolute ceiling right now and that's something I simply can't get on board with, unfortunately. I'm avoiding Hockenson this season if his ADP remains around where it is right now.Find me a more hyped up player this season than Pitts. Go ahead, I'll wait. It's near impossible to talk about the top-5 TEs this season and keep Pitts out of the conversation due to the opportunity that's now in front of him. It would be the definition of an outlier if he finished as a top-5 option in his rookie season, but the ball has to go somewhere in this offense and the Falcons are going to be committed to getting the ball in his hands. You're going to have to pay up to get him on your team, but the opportunity that he has in Atlanta this season might make it worth the investment.
Mark Ringo
Sleepers and Busts
Hockenson is probably the #1 receiving target for Jared Goff given the lousy core of wide receivers the Lions have with the departures of Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones. However, the Lions want to be a physical team that features the run. I have concerns about their passing attack and offense in general. This is the same team that took former 2019 Outland Trophy winner LT Penei Sewell in the draft, and then, for reasons unknown, are playing him at RT. That's a tough transition. Sewell has struggled so far. Hockenson is going too high for me given the lack of offensive firepower here. What if I told you it was possible to draft Calvin Johnson and play him at TE. Would you do it? In 30 years of playing fantasy football, Kyle Pitts is the best fantasy tight end I've ever seen. I had that same feeling back in 1998 when I first saw and drafted a rookie WR from Marshall on the Vikings, Randy Moss. I had that feeling again after I saw RB Saquon Barkley. Many experts said a rookie couldn't be drafted as the 1st or 2nd RB because he hadn't done it before. Saquon had over 2,028 total yards 91 receptions 15 TDs his rookie year. To paraphrase the line from A League of Their Own, "I know the goods when I see it. And he's the goods." When his career is all said and done Kyle Pitts will rewrite the record books at TE.

It's easy to become seduced by the potential volume Hockenson could see in Detroit's barely-there pass catching corps. The case for him is simple - Hockeson was a good prospect with elite draft capital and we're expecting growth in his portion of the team's target share. The concerns are that Hockenson's ADP is in a spot where tight ends are historically over drafted and that his situation caps upside. As the last option we can feel good about before the position begins free falling, Hockenson is ultimately worth considering at his current acquisition cost. The highest drafted tight end ever enters the NFL with a locked-in prominent role within his team's passing offense. Pitts is often described as a unicorn, a player who we all think can overcome the mostly negative history of rookie tight ends in fantasy football. In addition to his own talent, the case for Pitts lies in how much volume he could see post Julio Jones trade. His offensive environment is a positive as well, headlined by the underrated Matt Ryan and the forward-thinking Arthur Smith. Pitts has a large range of outcomes in his first season in the NFL, but the ceiling outcome keeps him in play as a top five or six round pick come draft day.

Hock finished as the TE5 last season behind a solid 67/723/6 receiving line. He could see those numbers soar in 2021 as the Lions' leading receiver in a Darren Waller-esque role. Detroit's receiving corps was gutted in the offseason, leaving a rookie and two veteran journeymen atop the depth chart alongside Hockenson. Volume alone should keep him in the top-6 conversation, despite Detroit's likely offensive struggles. It's really difficult not to rank Pitts as a top-5 option, even though rookie TEs almost never achieve that level of production. History is against him finishing as high as TE5, but I'm going to rank him there because the upside is enormous. Imagine drafting yawn-worthy options like Hockenson, Fant, or Thomas ahead of a guy like Pitts. It ain't gonna happen.

With Julio gone, Kyle Pitts could truly explode in Year 1 - a unicorn prospect with limitless target potential; has been a star of camp

We can talk about all the good things that Hockenson did last year, but it wouldn't matter. His world has been flipped upside down in 2021, as he has a new coaching staff, and more importantly, a new quarterback. The team isn't going to be in scoring position nearly as much, but the good news for Hockenson is that he's now the clear-cut No. 1 target on the team after we watched Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones leave in free agency. Jared Goff has limitations as a quarterback, but his skill-set should actually align with Hockenson's role quite well. It may not be exciting to start Hockenson week-to-week for upside purposes, but he should deliver a rock-solid floor that allows you to start him every week.He should be a very good player for a very long time, but we've seen highly-athletic tight ends have trouble out of the gate before. In fact, rookie tight ends in general have trouble producing. I want to ask you a question: Since 1998, how many tight ends do you think have topped 627 yards in their rookie season? Two of them. Both of those tight ends saw 115-plus targets, a number Pitts isn't likely to see with Arthur Smith as the new head coach. It helps that Julio Jones has left town, but don't forget that ultra-athletic Jonnu Smith saw just 65 targets in Smith's offense just last year, and he wasn't a rookie.

After a quiet rookie year, T.J. Hockenson broke onto the scene in 2020 finishing with 67 receptions for 723 yards and six TDs. The Lions are low on WR talent and with Jared Goff now at QB, I expect Hockenson to immediately become the team's No.1 target. Don't reach for him, but he's a great value in the middle rounds.I don't think I've ever seen more hype over a rookie tight end as I've seen for Kyle Pitts. This guy has all the makings of a future star in the NFL and he landed in a great spot to achieve that. With Julio Jones now in Tennessee, there will be more than enough targets to go around for Pitts to be a weekly starter at tight end.

T.J. Hockenson may be the best pass catcher on this roster. It is not out of the realm of possibility that he leads this team in targets, or finishes extremely close to the receiver who does. Given Goff's proclivity to target the position, we may be on the berth of the Hockenson breakout season.

The Draft Zone
Hockenson is truly primed to break into that upper echelon at the TE position this year. To start he has elite draft capital, had a 67 REC, 723 YDS, 6 TD season as 23-yr old, the Lions just lost their WR1 & WR2 and replaced them with journeymen WRs. He looks to be the top target in an offense that will be playing from behind all year long.

FantasyPros
Despite rarely seeming like a must-start option, Hockenson wound up finishing as the fourth-best tight end in fantasy last year. He received 101 targets, fifth-most at the position, and scored six touchdowns on 67 receptions. He'll now be dealing with a new quarterback in Jared Goff, a new offensive coordinator in Anthony Lynn, a new head coach in Dan Campbell, and little competition for targets with the departures of Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones. All signs out of Detroit point to Hockenson being the focal point of the offense this season in the passing game, which should mean big things for him as he enters his third year in the league. No one can or should doubt Pitts' talent or ability to succeed in the NFL long-term. He's one of the most physically gifted tight ends to ever come out of the draft, and in a few years, he's likely going to be the top pick in fantasy at the position. Given the historically poor performance of rookie tight ends in fantasy, there would ordinarily be reason to fade Pitts just a bit in redraft leagues. But Atlanta's trade of Julio Jones opens up too many targets for fantasy managers to let him slip far. Draft him as a top-5 tight end. and hope (and expect) that he bucks the trend for rookies at his position.

Hockenson had a breakout year with 141.8 fantasy points, but he may have a tough time duplicating that production playing with Jared Goff under center.Pitts still has a lot to prove as a rookie, but he is in a great situation playing with Matt Ryan and Calvin Ridley. He should be a mismatch nightmare and a high-end TE1.

Going into the season, the Lions have one of the best offensive line units in the NFL, so new QB Jared Goff is going to have time to throw. But who will he throw it to? A WR corpse of Tyrell Williams, Breshad Perriman and Amon-Ra St. Brown doesn't exactly screen production. Enter T.J. Hockenson. Hockenson quietly emerged for the Lions in 2020. With Golladay out most of the season, Hockenson either nearly doubled or more than doubled his output from his rookie season in nearly every offensive category including targets (59->101), receptions (32->67), receiving yards (367->723) and TDs (2->6). With not much competition for targets, a Waller-type season could be in the cards for Hockenson. With the departure of Julio Jones, many people are all aboard the Pitts bandwagon, but it might be a little premature. Rookie TEs are notoriously slow starters in their careers and are often not fantasy viable until much later. In the last 18 seasons, only two TE's (John Carlson and Evan Engram) have had more than 600 yards in their first season. Some analysts have Pitts as high as TE4, which is too high. Last year's TE4, TJ Hockenson, had 723 yards and 6TDs , numbers that only one rookie since 1988 (Engram) has come close to touching. Over the last 3 seasons, the TE4 has averaged 204.3 PPR points (17 game season), no rookie TE has reached that mark since Mike Ditka in 1961. STOP IT! To bet on Kyle Pitts to be a top 4 TE is to bet on something that has never happened before. With that being said, at the right draft price, which you won't be able to get, he should have enough opportunity to be a solid TE because of the opportunity in Atlanta.
