Sam Darnold could open Week One as the Jets' starter

Sam Darnold (QB - MIN)

New York Daily News Jets insider Manish Mehta wrote in his 'Mehta's Jets Mailbag' that No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold has a "great chance" to open the season as the club's starter "if Darnold is who the Jets think he is." (Manish Mehta via New York Daily News )

Mehta also said that the Jets' coaching staff and front office "think [Darnold] is going to be special." The only thing standing in the way from Darnold opening the season as New York's starter is soon-to-be 39-year-old signal-caller Josh McCown, who is coming off of the finest season of his long career. While there's no debate that Darnold is the future, if he can learn a pro offense and outplay the journeyman McCown this summer, Darnold will be given every opportunity to win the starting job in Year One.
