With Cam Newton rehabbing and Allen throwing three interceptions in a blowout loss to the 49ers, there was some speculation that Newton could be returning in Week 9. However, Newton is apparently not yet ready to return. It seemed possible just a week ago that Allen could be the long-term starter in Carolina and that Newton could be on the trade block, but Allen's performance against the 49ers in Week 8 has, at the very least, thrown some cold water onto that thought.
