In that case, Williams will play the 2020 season on the franchise tag, costing the Giants approximately $16.1M. If they were to work out a long-term deal they could surely spread out his cap hit, making it lower this year, but that’s unlikely to happen according to Vacchiano. Williams is looking to be paid top dollar to the tune of $18-20M, but it doesn’t seem like the Giants are willing to get to a number that high. And with the landscape of the league right now and the uncertainty surrounding the 2021 salary cap, its become difficult to negotiate contract extensions. Based on the circumstances, it’s more than likely that Williams and the Giants pick back up after the 2020 season to work on a long-term contract extension for one of the NFL’s best defensive lineman.
