Mike Tagliere FantasyPros | Now entering what he dubbed as his final season, Brees will look to start the year off with a bang against a Bucs team that's now led by Tom Brady. The Bucs pass defense played better down the stretch, though the strength of this team's defense is clearly stopping the run. They allowed just 907 rushing yards last year, while no other team allowed fewer than 1,039 yards. The Bucs didn't have many changes on defense, either. They added Antoine Winfield at safety, which should help the back end, as that's one area they were severely lacking. We know Brees as a quarterback who typically throws for 300 yards, right? Well, he's hit the 300-yard mark just once in his last seven games against the Bucs. In the lone game against an Arians-led team, he completed 28-of-35 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns, so it's not like you should be too worried. Brees also has an additional weapon at his disposal this season with Emmanuel Sanders being added. I don't think the Bucs have an answer for Michael Thomas, which is where we should see Brees go early and often. With how tough the Bucs are against the run, Brees should be expected to carry the Saints to victory here. With a team total of 26.8 points, he's not a bad bet for low-end QB1 production. | There used to be a time where the Seahawks defense would make you back away and think twice about starting a quarterback. Not anymore. There were 10 quarterbacks who finished as top-18 options against the Seahawks last year and with at least 16.1 fantasy points. Ryan missed the game against the Seahawks last year, but Matt Schaub stepped in and threw for 460 yards and one touchdown, finishing as the QB9 that week. The Seahawks defense lost Quinton Jefferson, Al Woods, Jadeveon Clowney, Ezekiel Ansah, and Mychal Kendricks this offseason, all key members of the front seven. They aren't going to generate pressure on a consistent basis with the players they have, which should allow Ryan to put up some numbers with his group of pass catchers. It's worth noting that no quarterback finished with more than 24.7 fantasy points against the Seahawks last year, which is likely due to the fact that none of them threw for more than two touchdowns. That's a fickle stat that can vary, though it's noteworthy that this defense tightened up down in the red zone. They did, however, allow five different running backs to score multiple rushing touchdowns, so maybe that evens out in 2020. In what I'm projecting to be a high-scoring affair, Ryan should be a safe, high-floor QB1. |
Zachary Hanshew FantasyPros | It's no secret that 2020 could be Brees' swan song, and he figures to go out competing for a title. Brees isn't the volume passer he was in his heyday, but he's one of the most accurate passers to ever play the game and can still pick apart opposing defenses at will, even if his attempts are down. He may fall just shy of a QB1 finish in 2020, but he should be a no-brainer start against the Buccaneers defense which allowed the third-most passing yards to opposing quarterbacks in 2019. | Matty Ice shouldn't have a tough time dueling it out with Russell Wilson in the NFL's opening week. With Julio Jones, an emerging Calvin Ridley, Hayden Hurst and Todd Gurley at his disposal, the high-volume passer is a quality fantasy start in Week 1. |
Jacob Wayne Lineups | Tampa Bay struggled to deal with the Saints' passing offense last season with either Drew Brees or Teddy Bridgewater at QB - in two games, one start for each guy, they averaged about 24 fantasy points. Brees will benefit from the addition of Emmanuel Sanders as the veteran receiver will help draw some defensive attention away from the All-Pro Michael Thomas. This game has one of the higher projected combined point totals on the week and should provide a friendly environment for fantasy production. | The Seahawks' defense allowed the fourth-most passing yards last season and ranked middle-of-the-pack in fantasy points allowed to QBs. Sure, the addition of Jamal Adams should be monumental in helping to turn that around, but I still expect Matt Ryan to be able to work the ball to Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley early and often. Game script could be in Ryan's favor in this game if the Seahawks get up early, as well. |
Kyle Yates FantasyPros | Brees is back for another season and he's got a loaded receiving corps at his disposal. Brees is an enticing start this week in what should be a high-scoring affair against Tom Brady and the Bucs. Points should be going up on the board in this one and Brees should be in your starting lineup. | The Seahawks defense is nowhere near the feared Legion of Boom from previous seasons, but it's still a pretty good unit. The addition of Jamal Adams certainly helps and they should give the Falcons a good fight. With that being said, the Seahawks do not have the CB talent to slow down Ryan's receiving duo. If you've got Ryan, plug him into your lineup. This game could quietly turn into a shootout with plenty of fantasy points to go around. |
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | The Bucs allowed the 9th most points to fantasy quarterbacks last year, but their defense was consistently put in bad positions with Jameis Winston throwing 30 interceptions. This is a new look Bucs team with Tom Brady, but I still think Brees is a QB1 at home. | The Seahawks were only 17th against fantasy quarterbacks last year, but their defense is in a bit of a flux with Jadeveon Clowney no longer with the team and the acquisition of Jamal Adams. Matt Ryan is established enough that I would trust him as a QB1, even if the moves improved the Hawks D from a year ago. |
