Mike Tagliere FantasyPros | It's hard to fully trust Murray after closing out the season on a low note, as he didn't top 16.36 fantasy points in each of the last five games), but Murray had two of his best games against the 49ers defense. Odd, right? In the two games against them, he completed 41-of-57 passes for 391 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for 101 yards and a touchdown. And that was before he had DeAndre Hopkins added to his stable of receivers. The 49ers aren't the same team, either. We watched Richard Sherman wear down during the playoffs (32 years old now), and then they traded away interior lineman DeForest Buckner to the Colts. Don't get me wrong, they're still going to be a very good defense, but I don't think they're getting close to the miniscule 5.90 yards per attempt they allowed last year. It sounds crazy, but there were just two quarterbacks all season who averaged more than 7.4 yards per attempt against the 49ers. Where Murray can benefit (and likely will) is on the ground, as the 49ers allowed the third-most rushing yards and the fifth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks on the ground. Knowing they've had a while to gameplan for this game, I'm guessing Kliff Kingsbury will have a few designed runs for the healthy Murray. It's not | The opening line for this game was Broncos by 1.5, but that changed once oddsmakers learned about Jadeveon Clowney signing with the Titans. Suddenly, they have one of the best defensive fronts in football. At the same time, we haven't seen Lock with his new set of weapons, and they're equally as good. He now has Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler, Noah Fant, Melvin Gordon, and Phillip Lindsay at his disposal. He also has a new offensive coordinator in Pat Shurmur, who's been better as an offensive coordinator than a head coach. His passing offense hasn't finished outside the top-18 in passing yards since way back in 2012, which bodes well for Lock. With that being said, he's still under Vic Fangio, who may be stuck in the old school mentality where if you're winning, you run the ball. In neutral gamescripts, the Broncos passed the ball just 57 percent of the time last year, which ranked as the ninth-lowest mark. In fact, both teams were low in that category (Titans had the third-lowest mark), so this could be a slow-paced, low-volume game. You likely didn't draft Lock to be your QB1 in season-long leagues, so you don't need to risk it here. If he plays well, that's the best-case scenario, as you might have yourself a starter moving forward. |
Zachary Hanshew FantasyPros | The Niners defense wasn't a world-beater in 2019 to opposing QBs, but the unit still ranked inside the top-10 in fewest points allowed to the position. Murray got off to an electric start as a rookie last season and got upgrades in DeAndre Hopkins and Kenyan Drake to help him succeed as a sophomore. He should be in for a big year, but it might be best to temper expectations a little in this tough spot.
Jacob Wayne Lineups | Kyler Murray is one of my favorite quarterbacks in the NFL right now and I'm projecting a significant sophomore leap for him after the addition of DeAndre Hopkins. However, the 49ers are a brutal opening matchup as their defense allowed the fewest passing yards and 10th-fewest fantasy points to QBs. Murray's rushing will give him a solid baseline, but the offensive line is going to need some time to gel and the Niners still have one of the best front sevens in football. I expect a couple of turnovers for Murray this week and I would try to look elsewhere at the position. | The Broncos did an awesome job of bringing in offensive talent to support Drew Lock this offseason. Melvin Gordon joins Phillip Lindsay in the running back room while Courtland Sutton will be aided by rookie wideouts Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler. Noah Fant could be set for a sophomore breakout as well. The Titans were middle-of-the-pack in most respects as a passing defense last season, although I don't see this being the right game script for him to have a high passing volume. Lock is a talented player with talent around him and I expect him to have a significant sophomore leap. |
Kyle Yates FantasyPros | You most likely drafted Murray as the QB5/QB6 off the board, so you're forced into starting him week one against the 49ers defense. This unit lost DeForest Buckner this offseason, but replaced him with Javon Kinlaw in the first round. Murray should be under pressure essentially all game, which forces me to drop him down my rankings a bit. He's still a fine start, but you need to temper expectations.
Isaiah Sirois FantasyPros | I'm a big fan of Drew Lock this season. That's why I have a decent ranking on him despite an otherwise tough matchup against the Titans. While I think he's a better bet than the guys below him, he's still no sure thing, as it'll take time for him to build chemistry with Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler. He's a decent pick mostly because of the talent that surrounds him.
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | For some reason, even though the 49ers were 10th against fantasy quarterbacks, the rookie had their number last year. Murray tallied 391 yards passing, 101 yards rushing, 4 passing TDs, and 1 rushing TD in 2 games against the 49ers. He should be a solid QB1 in Week 1, especially with DeAndre Hopkins now in the fold. |
