Mike Tagliere FantasyPros | Here's a crazy stat on Jackson that I thought was interesting. He didn't throw for more than 238 yards after Week 3. It just goes to show that he doesn't need to do much through the air to produce elite numbers. He tagged the Browns for 485 yards and six passing touchdowns last year and chipped in another 169 yards on the ground. That's all irrelevant in 2020, though, as the Browns defense is now under Joe Woods. He was the defensive coordinator in Denver for both the 2017 and 2018 seasons, then went to San Francisco for the 2019 season to be the defensive backs coach. We don't have a large sample size to draw from, as his time in Denver was a bit up-and-down, but what most don't understand is that this Browns defense has a lot of talent. One thing that I want to mention about Woods' defense is that his defenses in Denver ranked No. 1 against mobile quarterbacks in 2018 and No. 5 against them in 2019. They allowed fewer than 130 rushing yards to quarterbacks in each season. Still, learning a new offense and defense with virtually no offseason while your opponent has everyone returning is a problem. Jackson is a problem. When we have a quarterback who scored 19.8 or more fantasy points in 14-of-15 games last year, he's an elite every-week starter when on the field. The Browns defense might be improved, but I think it takes some time to develop chemistry. As always, Jackson is in play for both cash and tournaments. | It'll be weird seeing Brady with the Bucs uniform on in a real game, but this is what 2020 has brought us. It's not an easy one, though. The Saints defense is one of the best in the league, and they've only gotten better this offseason. They've added safety Malcolm Jenkins, as well as third-round linebacker Zack Baun to their potent defense that allowed just a 61.5 percent completion-rate and 6.92 yards per pass attempt in 2019. Don't forget about the addition at the end of last season either, as Janoris Jenkins was added to the cornerback unit. They did allow 26 passing touchdowns, though a lot of that comes from volume, as they faced 602 pass attempts last year. It is worth noting that the Saints defense allowed 23.2 points per game while at home compared to just 19.8 points per game on the road. Playing in the dome does typically help quarterbacks, and the Saints do score more there, leading to some garbage time stats for opponents. The 49.5-point over/under doesn't suggest this will be a crazy high-scoring contest, though. As a divisional game, it'll probably be tight. Jameis Winston completed 45-of-78 passes for 517 yards and four touchdowns during the two meetings last year, so it's not a must-avoid matchup or anything with Bruce Arians' offensive scheme. Still, there's some downside risk to this being a tough matchup in Brady's first game as a Bucs player. I'd consider him a mid-to-high-end QB2 for this week. I don't really want to play him in tournaments and don't think he's safe enough for cash. |
Zachary Hanshew FantasyPros | The Browns were only middle-of-the-road against QBs last season, and that figures to be the case again in 2020. Fresh off an MVP and an overall QB1 finish, Jackson will look to keep momentum on his side with a favorable home matchup with the Browns. In two meetings last season, L-Jax threw for 485 yards, 6 TDs and 2 INTs with 169 rushing yards. He's one of the best plays at his position for Week 1. | Despite his perceived "fall off" last season, Brady actually finished as a QB1 in 2019 with one of the worst group of skill-position players in the league. Now, he has his old pal Gronk back in his sights along with the dynamic duo of Chris Godwin and Mike Evans and a strong run game. In a great matchup with NO in Week 1, Brady should be a quality play in his first game as a Buccaneer. |
Jacob Wayne Lineups | Lamar Jackson scored 24+ fantasy points in each of his two games against the Browns last season and he's a solid bet to do the same in Week 1. Cleveland allowed the 11th-most fantasy points to QBs last year, and while their defense should be somewhat improved, Jackson is an impossible force to handle. Jackson's rushing production allowed him to finish as a top-6 fantasy QB 73.3% of the time last season and I would be shocked to see him finish outside of that range in Week 1. | Tom Brady will be opening up his tenure with the Buccaneers with a massive showdown against new division rival Saints. New Orleans allowed the 12th-most fantasy points to quarterbacks last year as they often found themselves playing prevent defense late in games. I think both of these teams could open up a little slower than we expect them to and I'm worried about Brady needing time to adjust to his new offense after no preseason and limited training camp. Brady is likely going to finish as a QB1 this year with all of the weapons at his disposal, but there are a handful of quarterbacks I like more than him this week. |
Steven Pintado The Fantasy Coaches | Must Start
Kyle Yates FantasyPros | It's going to be insanely strange to see Brady trot out onto the field in a different uniform, but he's absolutely set up to succeed here in Tampa. This game should be a high-scoring affair, which means that fantasy points are going to be going up everywhere. The Saints are a very tough matchup, which knocks Brady down just outside QB1 territory in my rankings, but he's still someone worth looking at in 1QB leagues.
Isaiah Sirois FantasyPros | The Ravens lost two regular-season games last year: one to the Chiefs, and one to the Browns. Jackson still put up 24.5 points in the defeat, however, and he should be able to post a similar performance here. The Browns look like a much better team this year, especially as they added safety Ronnie Harrison a few days ago, but I'm not confident in their ability to slow down the Ravens' dual-threat attack.
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Jackson had 485 yards passing, 169 yards rushing, and six passing touchdowns in 2 games against the Browns last year. He should be an elite QB1 play at home against the Browns. | The Saints were 21st against fantasy quarterbacks last year, it seems strange to say that Brady needs to prove anything at this point in his career. Given how poorly he played at 42-years old, I need to see that he still has enough left in the tank before I am going to rank him as a QB1. |
