Isaiah Sirois FantasyPros | Brown hasn't played well against the Browns so far in his career. He posted just 6.2 PPR points against them in Week 4, and he added just 1.6 PPR points in Week 16. While he was playing hurt last season, he will likely draw Denzel Ward again, and the fearsome former first-rounder isn't a great matchup. Ward's 4.32-second 40-yard dash proves that he can match Brown's freakish speed. Vegas sportsbooks expect the Ravens to get ahead to a big lead, too, and a clock-focused game script would limit Brown's upside. Only start him if you must, as Brown is little more than an extremely low-end WR3 or WR4 to me this week. Brown is a boom or bust receiver, and this week feels like a bust to me. | Boyd has a tough matchup in Week 1. As a slot receiver, there's a good chance that Boyd will draw either Desmond King or Chris Harris in coverage. Both of those are terrifying opponents -- King ranked as ProFootballFocus' top slot corner since 2017, while Harris is a four-time Pro Bowler. Joe Burrow might have better luck passing to Green, Ross, or Higgins this week. I don't think you should bench Boyd, but if you're flipping a coin between him and another play (say, I don't know, Jamison Crowder), you should go with the other player. |
Jacob Wayne Lineups | The Browns' passing defense was surprisingly solid last season as they allowed the ninth-fewest points to wide receivers and Marquise Brown scored a combined 3 fantasy points in two games against them. Brown's snap counts should be very high every week this season and he should be improved in year two, but he's a boom-or-bust WR2 in most matchups. | The Chargers will present a challenging matchup for Bengals receivers in Week 1 as they had the third-fewest fantasy points allowed to wide receiver last season. The Chargers also have one of the best cornerback trios in the NFL with Casey Heyward Jr., Chris Harris Jr., and Desmond King. All three are elite and all three are very capable of covering slot receivers, where Boyd plays. I would go with Boyd over A.J. Green in Week 1 given his familiarity with Zac Taylor's system |
Mike Tagliere FantasyPros | After seeing 34 targets over the first four games last year, Brown saw just 37 of them over the final 10 games. Injuries mounted up and his performances suffered. Now, after a healthy offseason, we'll see what he's capable of. The matchup with the Browns should be a decent one, as they figure to go with a zone-heavy scheme under Joe Woods (if he carries over what the defensive backs did in San Francisco). Brown crushed zone coverage last year, catching 22-of-31 targets for 310 yards and four touchdowns. When targeting Brown in zone, Lamar Jackson posted a 142.3 QB Rating. On top of that, it appears that Greedy Williams will not be available for this game, as he's nursing a shoulder injury. The Browns cornerback depth chart is not deep. The Ravens have talked about throwing the ball a bit more this year, so knowing how well the matchup aligns for Brown, you should be starting him as a high-upside WR3. Does he come with some downside? Sure, but he offers game-breaking/week-changing upside. He should be a tournament favorite this week in a game that's projected for nearly 50 points. | He saw 147 targets last year in his first year under Zac Taylor and people still wonder about starting him? He's an every-week starter as far as I'm concerned. However, this week isn't one where he's going to have one of his best games of the season. The Chargers allowed just two slot-heavy receivers top four receptions all year and allowed just three of them to top 42 yards. To be fair, they didn't play a lot of talented slot receivers, but it wasn't an easily exploited matchup is the point. Desmond King has been one of the better slot cornerbacks in the league over the last few years, allowing just 816 yards and two touchdowns on 106 targets over the last two seasons. What he does though, is allow a high catch rate, as 87-of-106 passes have been completed. That's a 82.1 percent catch-rate, so if Boyd gets the targets, he'll produce in PPR formats, though he may not get many yards after the catch. Given his familiarity in the system and Green's first appearance since 2018, Boyd is probably the best bet for production in this game. Start him as a WR3. |
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Boyd has been very solid the last two seasons, he is a WR3 with rookie Joe Burrow under center going against the Chargers 3rd ranked fantasy wide receiver defense. |
