As we prepare to head into the Week 3 slate of games it is one of the best times to take a look around your league and identify buy-low candidates. Owners are now a few weeks removed from their drafts, and they may be staring down the barrel of an 0-3 start. What you thought in the preseason shouldn’t be much different than what you think right now. This is a prime opportunity to seek out desperate owners and offer trades for players that may have under-performed thus far. Fantasy owners should take a look at schedules and the specific flow of games leading up to this week and use that information to separate the players that have started off with brutal matchups, and the players that are simply not going to live up to their expectation. Below are a handful of players that are primed to see their value rise in the coming weeks.

Frank Gore RB – Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts have had a nightmarish start to their 2015 NFL campaign. After getting trounced by both the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets, Gore owners may be questioning whether or not the bell-cow running back is actually in the team’s offensive game plans. The Colts big acquisition is averaging under 12 rushing attempts through two games and has been almost invisible in the passing game.

Fantasy owners need to pump the breaks when worrying about whether or not Gore is going to be a bust this season. Both the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets are elite defenses and the Colts fell behind almost immediately in both games, leading to the team abandoning the run and relying on throwing the ball in an attempt to get back into the game. Gore still has multiple games left with the Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Houston Texans. All three of these teams have already shown that they can be run on. You also need to look at the fact that Gore had a handful of excellent runs called back due to holding penalties and a walk-in touchdown erased when he fumbled crossing the goal-line. The days of Frank Gore seeing 25+ carries may be over, but the 32-year-old bruiser has still shown that he has some juice left in his legs. Barring a complete collapse by the Colts offense, Gore will be a high upside RB2 for the rest of the season.

Players I would trade for him: Justin Forsett, Alfred Morris

C.J. Anderson – RB – Denver Broncos

I cannot refute the fact that Anderson has been dreadful through the first two weeks of the NFL season, and I also cannot refute the fact that he has been outperformed by Ronnie Hillman on a consistent basis. Through the first two games Hillman is averaging more rushing yards, receiving yards, catches and total yards from scrimmage. This is leading to some fantasy owners looking to jump ship immediately as they feel that a change in starter, or at the very least a move to the dreaded running back by committee (RBBC), is coming in the very near future.

What I can tell you is that Anderson was outstanding inside the confines of the Peyton Manning-led spread offense, and that the Denver Broncos have really only seen offensive success this season when moving to that scheme. It is also important to understand that while Anderson has been disappointing so far, so has the entire Denver Broncos offense, and that absolutely includes Hillman. I can also tell you that Anderson has been dealing with multiple nagging injuries, and that only yesterday did he finally declare himself fully healthy after having an extended break as the Broncos played on Thursday night football last week. Neither running back has managed to crack 4.0 yards per carry in a single game so it is unrealistic to think anyone has a real leg up in this competition. Anderson entered the year as the starter and you have to assume that he’ll be given every opportunity to showcase his abilities now that he’s finally feeling healthy. I will fully admit that of the five players listed here this is the one that fantasy owners may be the least likely to try and acquire. New head coach Gary Kubiak has nothing personally invested in Anderson and if he feels like Hillman is a better player, then Hillman will be the running back that plays.

While Hillman is clearly a much shiftier runner than Anderson, the Broncos have ridden that train before. Hillman has alarming ball security issues and those would likely be compounded by the fact that the Broncos are regularly rolling out one of the worst offensive lines in the league. We have seen Anderson be special, his run from Week 8 through Week 15 last season was one of the more impressive performances by a young runner in recent memory. Now that the Broncos have had some extra time to get healthy, I fully expect Anderson to take control of an up-tempo offense and begin delivering on some of that preseason promise.

Players I would trade for him: Latavius Murray, Mark Ingram
