Tigers manager Jim Leyland is famous for protecting his players. That's the approach he's taking with No. 1 catcher Alex Avila.'He's not going to catch as many games as he did last year,' Leyland said. 'He's coming off patellar tendinitis. We've got about five-six right-handers (upcoming on the mound). ... He's probably going to catch the next five-six games in a row.' Avila and backup Gerald Laird had similar success against White Sox left-hander John Danks, so it made sense for Monday to be a night off for Avila.

One of his hits was a double, so he was able to leg it out so it seems his knee is fine. Avila did strike out twice in the outing, but the Tigers would win the game, 10-6.

“Gerald Laird signing may dig into Avila's playing time, but still a sold draft pick at catcher this season. Look for 20 home runs, 80 RBIs, and a .280 batting average.”

“Avila came out of nowhere in 2011 and finished with a .295 average and 19 homers. I didn't think he could maintain it after his hot start, but he handled himself pretty well all year long, although he cooled a bit at the end. He is only 25 years old, so a repeat of last year isn't far fetched as he should be in his prime. He also added a big, fat prince to the lineup that should help him out.”

“Avila broke out big time in 2011 with a .295/.389/.506 slash line (avg/obp/slg). He's still very young, after skipping AAA entirely, so we hope that we'll see more of the same, and less of the 2010 version (.228/.316/.340).”

“Avila had to be the surprise of last season hitting 19 HRs, and 82 RBIs. With no Victor Martinez this season, Avila has the chance to build on his breakout campaign. The Tigers lineup is deeper than ever with the addition of Prince Fielder, so there should be players on base all the time for this high scoring offense. Avila was without a HR the entire month of July, but finished up with a strong 9 spot that makes you have the confidence he can bounce back from a slump.”
