We've heard it repeated, every year: spring training doesn't matter. Besides crushing the spirit of my 12 year-old self, who, come March, would religiously check the spring training standings every day in...

“For some odd reason, everyone thinks maybe the greatest hitter of all time is done at the age of 36. The greatest hitter on a team where you can drive in 70 RBIs if your name is Russell Martin. The season prior to last A-Rod drove in 125 RBIs with 30 HRs in 137 Games. The two seasons before that he drove in 100 RBIs in less than 140 games. In fact the last full season A-Rod played, he put up he drove in 156 RBIs and hit 54 HRs in 2007. Yes I know it is 2012, but A-Rod will bounce back as he looks to be the leader of this Yankee Franchise. He falls to the 6th round of most drafts, and I will be a buyer on draft day.”

“People have been shying away from Rodriguez for a few years because they think he's perpetually injured, but the reality is that he's still never had fewer than 500 plate appearances. He's aging, but he's still a lock to hit 25 HR and 100 RBI.”

“I'm really not a fan of players who's numbers trend downwards, and A-Rod's have clearly done that, but even as a shell of his former self, he puts up better numbers than most players. Gone are the 50 homer/20 steal days from years past, and he hasn't played more than 138 games since 2007. Last season, he only played in 99, and unfortunately for his owners, they weren't a very productive 99. The upside is that he plays in a lineup that will score runs, and he hits in a great stadium. I do think the Yankees will try to rest him more, and there is zero chance of him stealing double-digit bases. Tentatively, a .275, 25 homer, 90 RBI, 90 Run, 5 steal season is doable, but he has to play 130 games or so to do it.”
