We all know that in 2012 Spring Training games and their associated stats are meaningless; except when they aren’t. Sure, many players use these pre-season exhibitions to test out a new pitch or approach, or to plunk a former teammate, but occasionally we’ll retroactively look back and see a breakout star who had a sexy spring. So, all that said, here are a few interesting tidbits that stick out...

There's no doubt McCutchen has 30-30 potential. Now in his fourth year in the majors, this is the year he will realize that potential. Though he has already achieved 30 steals one year in his career (2010), I'm more confident in him getting to 30 homers than 30 steals this season. He hit a career-high 23 last year, and all his relevant peripheral stats are trending in the right direction. In addition...

“Uggla had 12 HRs heading into July. He finished with 36. If Dan was hot all season long, he could have hit 50 with that kind of pace. His power from the 2B spot pushes him right behind the elites. You know you have huge power potential when you draft someone who has had 30 HRs 5 consecutive seasons. He could break into the 40 if he gets hot sooner, than later.”

“For 4 of his 6 years in the league, Dan Uggla has gotten nearly 700 plate appearances with an AVG at or below .260. He can kill your team's AVG in a 5x5 league. However, he might be the only lock to hit more than 30 HR at the position.”

“Uggla had a tale of 2 seasons in 2011. Couldn't hit a lick the first half, then went on a tear in the 2nd. Uggla always finishes with 30 homers, and he finished with a career high 36 in 2011. What's alarming, is that he dropped in all the other 4 categories. I see some red flags here. The power is great, but you better pair him with Jose Reyes in the MI to make this work, because his .240 avg will kill you.”
