With more and more fantasy owners opting to wait on the quarterback and tight end positions in drafts, streaming each position has become a viable option. This is made easier by the fact that there are usually solid options on the waiver wire. Each week this column will scour the waiver wire and look for quarterbacks and tight ends who are owned in fewer than 50% of leagues and could be worth starting for your fantasy team.
All ownership percentages come from Yahoo fantasy leagues and all references to fantasy points allowed per game come from our fantasy points allowed (PA) reports. All references to DVOA (Defense-Adjusted Value Over Average) come from rankings on www.footballoutsiders.com. A detailed explanation of DVOA can be found here.

Quarterback
Alex Smith – Kansas City Chiefs (32% owned)
@ Baltimore Ravens
Smith gets a tasty matchup against a Baltimore defense that just allowed five touchdown passes to Russell Wilson in Week 14 and has struggled to defend the pass all season. Smith is a solid floor play, albeit one with limited upside because the Chiefs just don’t throw the ball all that often. With that being said, Baltimore has been decent against the run this season, which may force the Chiefs to air it out a little more than usual in this game. Smith would be best utilized as a playoff streamer if you perceive your team as favored heading into your contest and just need solid production from the quarterback spot.
Ryan Fitzpatrick – New York Jets (46% owned)
@ Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys have done a good job of limiting opposing quarterbacks by playing slow on offense and trying to control the time of possession, but that masks their average pass defense. Through Week 13, they are allowing opposing quarterbacks to score just 15.1 fantasy points per game, 25th in the league, but the matchup isn’t as bad as that stat shows. The Cowboys’ pass defense is ranked 15th in the league in DVOA, giving Fitzpatrick a neutral matchup this weekend. Fitzpatrick and the New York offense have been playing well as of late and should be able to keep rolling this Saturday night. Over his last three games, Fitzpatrick has thrown for nine touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Tight End
Zach Miller – Chicago Bears (19% owned)
@ Minnesota Vikings
In Week 14, Miller took full advantage of Martellus Bennett’s season-ending trip to injured reserve, pulling in five balls for 85 yards and one touchdown against a Washington defense that has been rather stingy against tight ends all season. Look for Miller to remain a key part of Chicago’s pass offense this weekend when they travel to Minnesota. The Vikings are ranked just 25th in the league in DVOA against tight ends, giving Miller a plus matchup for the fantasy playoffs.
Vernon Davis – Denver Broncos (45% owned)
@ Pittsburgh Steelers
Davis has been up-and-down since joining the Broncos, but he turned in an excellent game in Week 14 against the Raiders. He turned nine targets into seven catches for 74 yards. The Steelers, like the Raiders, have struggled to contain opposing tight ends this season. On the year, Pittsburgh has allowed the eighth-most points to the position at 9.9 per game. Davis has a low floor, but can be deployed if you are in a pinch at the position this weekend.
