What Do You Do With Sammy Watkins?

Is it time for Sammy Watkins’ owners to panic?

Many of us thought Sammy Watkins was on the verge of a breakout season in 2016. He finished 2015 with 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns in just 13 games. With Tyrod Taylor back and most of the offense back this year, this had the feel of a special year for Watkins.

Here we are three games into the season, and Watkins has a whopping 63 yards on six catches (in two games). He missed Week 3with what appears to be a lingering foot issue, which frankly is more concerning than the lack of production early this year. We’ve seen from previous WRs, most recently Dez Bryant, that the Jones Fracture Watkins is dealing with can cause extended problems.

So what do we do with Sammy?

Unless owners in your league are rabid Bills fans and/or have been living under a rock, it’s going to be tough to get anything valuable (i.e. WR2 or RB2 types) in return for him. The best thing we can hope for is that the Bills are smart with him, and hold him out until he is close to 100%. He won’t do the Bills or fantasy owners any good limping around the field. If you own him there really is no choice but to hold, and if you don’t own him he’s not a bad buy-low target. There are no obvious pass catchers in Buffalo and when Watkins does get healthy and back on the field, he figures to pick up where he left off last year. Be patient with him, and scoop him up if you can get him at a discounted price from a disgruntled owner.
