DRAFT PGA Recommended Plays: Quicken Loans National

DRAFT PGA Recommended Plays: Quicken Loans National

The next stop on the 2018 PGA Tour is TPC Potomac, which is just outside of Washington D.C., for the Quicken Loans National. TPC Potomac is a 7,104 yard Par 70 which grades out as one of the more rudimentary stops on the PGA rota.

The most obvious place to start is the return of Tiger Woods, who will be returning to action for the first time since the U.S. Open two weeks ago. He has won this tournament two times previously but that was when the tournament was being played at an entirely different course. 2017 was the first time TPC Potomac served as the host for the Quicken Loans National which was ultimately won in a playoff by Kyle Stanley.

After hosting this event for twenty years from 1986-2006, the course began a $20-plus million renovation in 2007 led by Stephen Wenzloff and Jim Hardy due to concerns about its poor design and drainage issues. They were tasked with transforming the course into a tournament-worthy venue once again. The course reopened in 2009 and has hosted a few Web.com and Senior Tour events since that point.

Outside of Tiger, Rickie Fowler and Marc Leishman, this field is very watered-down compared to what we’ve seen in the past few weeks. Not a lot of household names will be teeing it up this week. Some have already started to prep for The Open Championship next month while others are simply taking a mid-season break. Personally, this isn’t one of my favorite tournaments to target from a DFS perspective because the field is so sub-par. And on top of that, the course has only hosted this event once since undergoing a massive renovation so there isn’t a lot of data to look back on. But nonetheless, here are some of the golfers that I will be targeting this week on DRAFT.

GOLFERS

Rickie Fowler: The 7th ranked player in the world was the headliner at last year’s event here and placed third in his first-ever appearance. Because of the snake-style set-up on DRAFT, you are going to want to target players of Fowler’s caliber early and often because, as I stated earlier, there simply aren’t many high-class golfers teeing it up here this week. Fowler is my preferred number one selection over Rose because he has experience playing this course.

Francesco Molinari: One of the most accurate ball-strikers on Tour, Molinari will likely find success at this course because it puts more of an emphasis on accuracy than length. He doesn’t play on the PGA Tour unless he believes that he has a strong chance to contend, and I think this course suits him pretty well. It also doesn’t hurt that in his last three tournaments, he has won, finished second and finished in a tie for 25th at the U.S. Open.

Tiger Woods: Yup, I will be rolling with Tiger this week even after targeting him at the U.S. Open. His struggles off-the-tee have been well-documented this season, but since Potomac isn’t an overly long setup, Woods can compete with his three-wood or irons off-the-tee. Accuracy will be more important than distance this week, which is good for Tiger because he’s been really solid with his approach in 2018. I also have a feeling that Tiger wouldn’t choose to come to such an inferior event if he didn’t believe he had a good chance of winning.

Kyle Stanley: I will be targeting Stanley because he has flashed good form as of late but mostly because he won this event last season. He finished T10 at the Travelers last weekend, another shorter-length course that penalizes you for poor approach shots, and scored a T2 finish at the Memorial three weeks ago.

Beau Hossler: Hossler always seems to be in the mix in these tournaments that feature lesser-known players. He has been a cut-making machine in 2018, as he’s made 10 consecutive cuts since mid-March and made a late charge last week at the Travelers to finish in a tie for second. He may not contend for a victory, but he seems like one of the safest options in the field to make the cut this week.
