Fantasy Basketball Category Analysis: Week 7 (2021)

Fantasy Basketball Category Analysis: Week 7 (2021)

It’s Tuesday. You know what that means.

When I go through the names every other week, I always question if 60 percent rostership is a good bar to go off of. Frankly, it leaves a lot of players who shouldn’t be rostered in standard leagues.

Not this week. No, not at all.

This week, we have a ton of players who either should be rostered at a much higher rate, but they aren’t because either A. people have checked out already, which seems insanely early, or B. people have given up on certain struggling players.

This is your time to act and get ahead of your active league mates by scooping them up.

Every other week, we’ll be looking at players who are widely available and rostered in fewer than 60 percent of fantasy leagues on Yahoo. We’ll be focusing on 8-cat leagues because turnovers are a waste of a category, to be honest. We’ll be looking at players who can help you in each of the eight categories who you can get before your league-mates catch on.

The eight categories we’ll focus on each week are:

  1. Points
  2. Rebounds
  3. Assists
  4. Steals
  5. Blocks
  6. Threes
  7. Field-goal percentage
  8. Free-throw percentage

Let’s get to it.

Points

Derrick Rose (PG/SG – DET) 60%
All it took was Rose to miss a couple of games for him to slip below – well, right at – the waterline. This should trend up, as he came back and scored 13, 14, and eight points in his return. The Pistons aren’t great, but they have viable fantasy options. We’ll get into more of them below. Expect Rose’s minutes to trend back up to the mid-to-high-20s.

Rebounds

Mason Plumlee (PF/C – DET) 59%
Another Piston leads the way here, though he’s quite boring. He has, however, turned quite a profit for his player props this year, with his rebound totals coming in at around 7.5 for the books. In three of his past four games, he’s totaled double-digit boards. He’s worth grabbing.

Assists

Immanuel Quickley (PG – NYK) 48%
We had Quickley on here just two weeks ago, and his rostership was at 39 percent. Why, oh why, has it only gone up nine percent in 14 games? He should be rostered in closer to 75 percent of games. He’s been a legit difference-maker on the court for the Knicks offensively.

Steals

Donte DiVincenzo (PG/SG – MIL) 58%
DiVincenzo may not have taken the next step we were hoping for from him, but he’s been a solid top 85-90 player for fantasy managers. His usage and minutes are down since Milwaukee blows everyone out, but he’s still giving across-the-board production, including 1.3 steals per game.

Blocks

Jarred Vanderbilt (SF/PF – MIN) 24%
Vanderbilt is another player whose rostership number is way too low. He’s run away with the starting power forward job, and all indications point to him keeping that job once Karl-Anthony Towns returns. He has top 60 potential going forward.

Threes

Wayne Ellington (SG/SF – DET) 44%
We’ve seen what happens if Ellington’s shot isn’t working. He’s kind of useless for fantasy managers. But he’s hit at least four threes in a game in seven of his 10 games this year. That’s elite shooting that we will ride the hot streak for.

Field-goal percentage

Danilo Gallinari (SF/PF – ATL) 59%
It’s frustrating because the Hawks have so many good players, but they are having a hard time finding playing time for them. Gallinari has been hurt most of the year, but his PER is similar to his past few seasons. Hold on and be patient with him. The minutes and the production will come.

Free-throw percentage

Jeremy Lamb (SG/SF – IND) 52%
Justin Holiday has been the player who has appeared in this column regularly – he is still under-rostered – by Lamb is back and healthy for the Pacers, so let’s slot him in here now. This is the last chance to grab him before he reaches the 70 percent mark. Remember, the Pacers are without T.J. Warren and Caris LeVert still. Lamb is a must-roster.
