Player Profile
Once a walk-on fullback at Ole Miss, Knox is making a name for himself in one of the NFL’s most exciting offenses. His NFL combine numbers don’t lead one to believe he’s particularly quick or strong, but Knox is proving to be a capable receiver. The Bills even took him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Through four games, he sits at TE9.
Though he hasn’t surpassed 50 receiving yards or five receptions in any one game, he has scored four touchdowns in four games. He has caught 15 of his 20 targets for an impressive 75% catch rate, too. He isn’t doing anything spectacular on the field, but he appears to have a great relationship with Bills quarterback Josh Allen, and Allen has been looking his way often.
Knox is giving off big-time Robert Tonyan vibes.
The State of The Offense
You’d be hard-pressed to find a better situation for an up-and-coming receiver. After Stefon Diggs, the Bills have a sundry of good-not-great weapons. Cole Beasley, Emmanuel Sanders, and Gabriel Davis have all shined. However, their successes appear to be more a function of Buffalo’s pass-happy offense and Allen’s arm. Knox doesn’t possess the elite route-running or explosivity of a traditional wide receiver, but there will be games where he is the second-most targeted player in Buffalo.
Through four weeks, the Bills are seventh in total passing attempts. They are first in the number of trips to the red zone, and Josh Allen is tied for the most passing attempts in that part of the field. These are all fantastic figures for Knox’s fantasy prospects.
Knox’s Outlook
I said this already, but Knox is giving me major Robert Tonyan vibes. However, I believe that there’s more to be excited about. Firstly, Tonyan doesn’t play all that much. He usually plays on 60% of the offensive snaps. In contrast, Knox has played on 81%, 78%, and 83% of the snaps in his last three outings.
Although Allen is incredibly mobile and quick as quarterbacks go, there’s no elite running back eating into touches. To go back to our Tonyan analogy, he doesn’t have to compete against Aaron Jones. The Buffalo Bills look allergic to running the football. Dawson Knox will only benefit from that.
Additionally, it’s clear Dawson Knox is quickly becoming one of Josh Allen’s favorite teammates. In Sunday’s post-game press conference, Allen jokingly interrupted Knox to make sure the media knew “[Knox] does everything right throughout the week.”
I am dubbing Dawson Knox, a better version of Robert Tonyan. The tight position is again relatively threadbare, Knox should be rostered in most leagues.
