2022 East-West Shrine Game Recap & Winners/Losers (Fantasy Football)

2022 East-West Shrine Game Recap & Winners/Losers (Fantasy Football)

The 97th edition of the East-West Shrine Bowl was played Thursday night in Las Vegas, with the West team coming out on top 25-24. The West jumped out to a commanding lead in the game and was able to withstand a comeback by the East squad to hold on to win. The game in itself was sloppy, and in reality, the most important part of these games is the practice leading up to it. However, some players did help, and others hurt their draft stock Thursday night. Here are some winners and losers from the game.

Winners

EJ Perry (QB – Brown): 6’1, 212lbs

If it weren’t for EJ Perry, the East team’s offense would have been a complete failure. Perry, who played at Boston College before transferring to Brown, threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns in the second half. Perry was named the game’s Offensive MVP. While at quarterback, he showed good accuracy down the field and was the only quarterback to push the ball downfield and put pressure on the defense vertically. Perry also can use his legs and is much more athletic than people give him credit for. Perry has positioned himself nicely, and depending on the rest of the pre-draft activities; we could see Perry get drafted in later rounds in April.

Pierre Strong Jr. (RB – South Dakota State): 5’11”, 203lbs

Pierre Strong Jr. is someone that I have been highlighting all week. Strong recently completed his fourth season for South Dakota State, leading the nation (FCS) in rushing with 1,686 yards to go with 18 rushing touchdowns. While he didn’t do much on the ground due to the porous offensive performance on the EAST side of the ball, he did have a 65-yard TD catch to score the first points for his team. If Pierre can show that he can consistently be a receiving threat, we are going to see him get drafted much sooner than many think in April.

Jashaun Corbin (RB – Florida State): 5’11″, 205lbs

Jashaun Corbin is a player that has been underrated his entire career. The Florida State running back started the Shrine week, weighing in about fifteen pounds less than his listed weight had been in college. That is less than ideal for a running back, but his performance on Thursday helped him quite a bit. He rushed for fifty yards and one touchdown on eight carries for the WEST squad. Corbin has shown good one-cut explosiveness in college and has an elite vision. If he gets drafted to a team with a plan for him and in a zone-read scheme, Corbin could make himself fantasy relevant in 2022.

Ty Chandler (RB – North Carolina): 5’10”, 203lbs

Ty Chandler had the best performance of any player in the Shrine Bowl. He was praised throughout the week by coaches in practice, and he also had a great game. He rushed for sixty-nine yards on eleven carries and added one catch for eight yards. He looked explosive on his runs which included two runs over fifteen yards. He has been touted as the fastest and quickest running back on the West team, which showed Thursday night. Chandler should have made a big impact on draft boards.

Jelani Woods (TE – Virginia): 6’6″, 259lbs

Woods has been one of the standouts all week. Woods finished the game with three receptions for thirty yards and a touchdown. He’s getting rave reviews for his work ethic, and scouts love his size. Woods showed the ability to get off the line quickly, and he has soft hands for a tight end. He had forty-four receptions for 598 yards and eight touchdowns in his one season at Virginia. Woods fits the modern NFL, and with the week he’s had could be moving up draft boards at the tight end position.

Losers

Dustin Crum (QB – Kent State): 6’1, 219lbs

The East quarterbacks were abysmal Thursday night. Crum threw for only thirty-seven yards and routinely failed to push the ball down the field. He led multiple 3-and-out drives and was a big reason why they were unable to score consistently in the first half. He led the team in rushing but that was only twenty-nine yards. The former Kent State did little for his draft stock this week and will most likely go undrafted in the 2022 draft.

Leddie Brown (RB – West Virginia): 6’0, 215lbs

Leddie Brown had a rough night. He rushed for just sixteen yards and he had a fumble that led to a loss of possession for his team. One big area of concern for Brown has been his fumbling. He fumbled six times last season, and he’ll need to show growth there. He had a 1,000-yard season in 2021 while also scoring thirteen touchdowns on the ground. Brown does a lot of things well as a runner. He is explosive at the line of scrimmage and has excellent vision. But he did not help his draft stock this week.

Charleston Rambo (WR – Miami): 6’0, 180 lbs

While Rambo had a good week at practice, he failed to transfer those performances over to the game Thursday. Crum failed to target him down the field, and he would finish with just two receptions for just twenty-three yards. A lackluster performance from a receiver that needed a big week to help his draft stock. There’s still hope for Rambo, who had 79 receptions for 1,172 yards and seven touchdowns last season in Miami, but he’ll need an excellent combine and pro day.
