DK Metcalf not practicing with the team

According to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times, WR DK Metcalf does not appear to be practicing with the team despite reporting to training camp (Source: Bob Condotta on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: The Seattle Seahawks are at the point now where Metcalf is expecting a second deal with the team. After having foot surgery this offseason, Metcalf did report to camp without an injury designation, but the sit-out appears to be more related to the contract. With Metcalf at least reporting, the chances this gets resolved soon are higher. Metcalf is currently going on average as the WR18 in PPR formats, according to FantasyPros. He has back-to-back top-10 finishes and three seasons of 900-plus yards, but the state of Seattle’s offense this season is a major question mark for fantasy managers.

Diontae Johnson a limited participant, wants contract

While speaking with the media, Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin said that WR Diontae Johnson was not a full participant in Wednesday’s practice and that it was not his decision for Johnson to do less on the field than his teammates. (Source: Pro Football Talk)

Fantasy Impact: Johnson has made it clear that he desires a contract extension as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. After practice Wednesday, Johnson said, “I want to be here long-term, but that’s up to them”. Tomlin’s comments imply that Johnson is choosing to not fully participate due to his frustrations regarding his contract status, so his practice and participation status may be something that fantasy managers need to monitor as the season approaches. Numerous reports this offseason have indicated that it’s unlikely that the Steelers will be able to pay Johnson market value, as he’s likely to command a contract in the $20-25 million range after several big-name WRs received large contracts earlier this offseason. The Steelers used two early to mid-round picks in April’s NFL Draft to select WRs George Pickens and Calvin Austin, a sign that the team may be bracing for Johnson’s departure after this season.

Deebo Samuel doesn’t practice, contract talks continue

Deebo Samuel did not participate in San Francisco’s first camp practice but instead worked on conditioning on the side. (Source: Cam Inman on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed optimism that the 49ers and the wideout would agree on a new contract. Samuel is coming off a career year that saw him finish as the WR2 overall. His current ADP is 17, and while he is in line for some negative regression, he still offers an elite skillset for fantasy managers.

James Cook getting passing-down work in camp

According to Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic, second-round rookie RB James Cook is seeing work as a pass-catcher early in training camp. (Source: Joe Buscaglia, The Athletic)

Fantasy Impact: The Buffalo Bills’ offense has two things guaranteed in 2022: lots of touchdowns and lots of passes. With both WRs Cole Beasley and Emmanuel Sanders out of the picture, there are a lot of vacated targets to distribute. And with a second-round draft pick, the Bills put solid capital into Cook. It has been reported that Singletary has been the favorite to lead the backfield, but if Cook can carve himself at least a third-down role in the offense this season, he could see solid production in PPR formats. Cook is currently being drafted on average as RB39 in PPR formats, according to FantasyPros, and could push for flex value in a potent offense.
