Dalton Schultz contract extension unlikely before deadline
Adam Schefter reports Dalton Schultz and Cowboys “are not expected to reach agreement” regarding a contract extension before the July 15 deadline for franchise players. (Source: ESPN – Adam Schefter)
Fantasy Impact: While Dalton Schultz’s long-term future with the Cowboys may be uncertain, he will be playing for Dallas in 2022. Schultz is currently going in fantasy drafts as a Top 6 TE and should continue to do so. While his dynasty value is not helped much by this news, Schultz now has even more reason to play exceptionally well in 2022 in pursuit of a long-term deal. The Cowboys will look to Schultz this season to fill Amari Cooper’s vacated targets and to step up while Michael Gallup gets healthy.
Jimmy Garoppolo has resumed throwing, expected to make full recovery
According to The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo “resumed throwing two to three weeks ago” after having shoulder surgery earlier this offseason. (Source: The Athletic)
Fantasy Impact: Three weeks ago ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Garoppolo’s trade market is expected to heat up once he begins throwing and passes a physical, so this news appears to check one of the final boxes before Garoppolo finds a new home. With Baker Mayfield being traded to the Carolina Panthers earlier this month, there are few teams that are likely to be interested in acquiring Garoppolo. The Seahawks and Texans have been rumored to be potential suitors, but with both teams in rebuilding phases (despite what Pete Carroll says), acquiring an expensive veteran QB one year away from the highly touted 2023 QB class isn’t necessarily an ideal team building strategy for either team. The Browns, who have a playoff-caliber roster and a QB who is likely facing suspension, are another team that has been linked to Garoppolo. When healthy, Garoppolo has functioned as a QB2 in fantasy football, but his 2022 value will be dependent on where he ends up playing.
Darnell Mooney bulked up for a bigger role
According to Dan Pompei of The Athletic, WR Darnell Mooney has bulked up from the “low 170s” to 183 and is focusing on stamina training for a bigger role in the new Chicago Bears offense. (Source: Dan Pompei, The Athletic)
Fantasy Impact: The Bears went out with the old and in with the new this offseason — whether that’s the front office, coaches or players. And in a new offense led by offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, Mooney is looking to be even more involved. There’s a focus on making the third-year WR more dynamic in alignment, “going from outside to the slot, on the ball to off the ball and sending him in motion before the snap.” After being top five in snaps and top 10 in targets last season among wideouts, Mooney is currently going as the WR24 in PPR formats, according to FantasyPros average draft position. If QB Justin Fields takes a step forward and more life is found in Chicago’s offense, Mooney has the potential to surpass that mark as the team’s top receiver.
Mike Gesicki not expected to agree to contract extension with Dolphins
Franchise-tagged tight end Mike Gesicki and the Dolphins are not expected to reach an agreement on a contract extension before the Friday, July 15 deadline. (Source: Adam Schefter on Twitter)
Fantasy Impact: The fifth-year tight end enters the year as TE11 according to FantasyPros average draft position, and this news should have no impact on that. Gesicki is coming off a season where he finished third in targets, fifth in receptions, and eighth in yards among all tight ends. The offseason additions of Tyreek Hill, Cedrick Wilson, and pass-catching running back Chase Edmonds might hurt Gesicki’s volume, but could help in terms of touchdown production. The new and improved Miami offense is bound to get more red zone opportunities in 2022 after finishing last season 25th in the category, and an athletic, 6’6” tight end makes for an easy target in those situations.
