2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Andrew Vorhees (OG – Southern California)

Andrew Vorhees (OG – USC)

6’6″ – 325 lbs.

Background:

Three-star recruit who stepped into a starting role early in his career, taking 52 snaps at right tackle and 44 at right guard in weeks three and five of the 2017 season before assuming the starting right guard role (nine games). Started eleven games there the following year, then redshirted in 2019 with an ankle injury. Came back to start five games at left guard in the shortened 2020 season, then the first seven at left guard and the last five at left tackle in 2021. Finished with eleven starts at left guard as a redshirt senior. Allowed eleven career sacks, eight of which came in 2017 and 2018.

Positives:

Experienced player who started 48 games for the Trojans, mostly at guard but with five coming on the blind side. Tall, thickly-built offensive lineman with the frame to play anywhere. Plays the game with competitiveness, toughness, and physicality; little question about his temperament. Overall functional strength is adequate to above average. Short-area quickness is good enough to get up to the second level, showing an impressive work rate to engage linebackers in space. Able to pull across the formation and crack defenders. Has a powerful shove to knock opponents off-balance on contact. Solid grip strength to sustain when engaged. Has adequate width in his pass sets and shows some knee bend. Active hand-fighter who’s proactive with his punch. Has an adequate anchor to absorb opposing bull-rushers. Keeps his head on a swivel and seeks out opponents to block.

Negatives:

Will be twenty-four on draft day after spending six years in school. Has a tendency to lower his head into contact, leading to whiffs. Wasn’t especially penalty-prone in school (eighteen career penalties) but has grabby tendencies and could get flagged often in the pros if he doesn’t improve his hand placement. Lunges in space and ends up on the ground more often than you’d like. Very much a “catch and ride” blocker in pass pro. Lateral quickness is average, and can struggle to maintain his form when mirroring. Can be a leaner at times, causing him to fall off of blocks. May not have the length to play tackle if needed.

Summary:

A big, experienced guard with a tough, physical temperament, but he needs to improve his overall discipline and hand placement to avoid being exposed/flagged at the pro level. The Trojans had a pretty good mix of gap and zone concepts this past season but would fit best on the inside of an offensive line based around gap/power principles, where his size and power would be highlighted. Seems likely to go a bit higher on draft day than my own impressions would suggest.

Projection: Round 3
