2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Jarrett Patterson (OL – Notre Dame)

Jarrett Patterson (OL – Notre Dame)

6’4″ – 310 lbs.

Background:

Played sparingly in 2018, then started the past four years, the first three of which came at center, totaling 34 games, before switching to left guard this past year and starting twelve games. Made it through his entire career without allowing a sack.

Positives:

Team captain and effective four-year starter for one of college football’s most respected offensive line factories. Has experience at both guard and center. Solidly built for the interior, with a thick frame. Smart player who can reliably execute a number of different types of blocks in the run game and who shows a strong understanding of positioning. Able to pull to the right side of the line and crack defenders. Has enough short-area quickness to chip and climb. Knows how to attack the outside shoulder and seal defenders. Works well on double-team blocks. Functional strength is as good as anticipated; drops an early anchor against power in the passing game. Active with his hands, gets good extension to keep opponents out of his pads and does a nice job of resetting. Has enough power in his hands to jolt opponents on contact when punching/shoving. Seeks out opportunities to help teammates when given the opportunity. Executed some pulls on passing downs as well.

Negatives:

Can be a little bit of a waist-bender/leaner. Base gets slightly narrow at times. Generally speaking, is more of a wall-off blocker than a true phone-booth mauler, lacking explosive movement skills. Pad level gets a little bit high out of his stance; could be more consistent about firing out low. Grip strength to sustain is just adequate. Not the quickest or most athletic option on the interior, which may limit his appeal to teams that primarily use zone-blocking principles. Lateral quickness to mirror in pass protection is average at best; relies more on his smarts, frame, and strength to get the job done. Doesn’t have starting experience at right guard.

Summary:

A smart, experienced, and well-built “lunchpail” type player who may not have the most impressive athletic tools but who was able to get the job done consistently at the college level over the past four seasons and who has experience playing both guard and center, traits which should attract mid-round interest from teams which primarily run gap concepts in the run game and who are looking for a relatively high-floor player who at the very least should be able to serve as a swing reserve and spot starter on the interior.

Projection: Round 4-5
