2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Mohamed Kamara (DE – Colorado St.)

As the college football season heads toward its finish, FantasyPros will be taking a look at early NFL Draft scouting reports before the Combine in March. Here’s a look at Mohamed Kamara.

2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Mohamed Kamara

Mohamed Kamara (DE – Colorado St.)

6’1″ – 250 lbs.

Background:

Three-star recruit who appeared in nine games as a true freshman, totaling 22 tackles. In four games the following year he picked up another 21 tackles before missing the remainder of the year. Started three games and totaled 373 snaps overall in 2021, finishing with 36-9.5-6.5, and has been highly productive since then. Went 44-16.0-8.5 last year, and already has 56-17.0-13.0 this year as of the time of writing.

Positives:

Has been highly productive for the past three seasons, with escalating output. Takes snaps as both a traditional end and out of a two-point stance off the edge. Plays the game with intensity and toughness. Has pretty good functional strength for his size to anchor and set the edge. Shows pretty good discipline on the backside in the run game. Gives good effort in pursuit, and has adequate to above-average range overall. Has an explosive first step to threaten on the edge. Quickness out of his stance allows him to get penetration with inside moves, which he uses frequently. Contact balance is better than anticipated for his size, and can bend his knees and get low to slip past punches and navigate through congestion. Flashes a viable spin counter that complements his approach well. Gets his hands up to contest passing lanes. Shows pretty good speed on limited spot drops.

Negatives:

On the small side for a pro edge defender, with what looks like limited length. Can struggle to disengage from blocks at times, and lack of length prevents him from making tackles when engaged. Lapses into throwing his body around, rather than getting extension to play off of blocks and keep opponents out of his pads. May be overly reliant on inside moves, and they occasionally cause him to give up the edge in the run game. Some balance issues crop up at times when trying to bend the edge, and may not have ideal ankle flexibility. Rarely used as a coverage linebacker.

Summary:

A tough, physical edge defender whose explosive first step, suddenness, and contact balance have allowed him to rack up huge tackle-for-loss/sack totals in school, mostly on inside moves. However, he also lacks ideal height and length for a pro edge defender and could stand to improve his hand use and diversify his rush approach. Given that he’s a bit smaller than some teams like, might end up going somewhere on the early third day.

Projection: Round 4-5
