2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Andrew Mukuba

Andrew Mukuba (DB – Texas)

6-foot-0 | 190 Pounds

Background

Born in Zimbabwe to a Congolese family, Andrew Mukuba immigrated to Austin when he was nine. He was a four-star recruit who originally attended Clemson, becoming the team’s first-ever freshman starter at defensive back. He totaled 47 tackles and seven breakups that year.

Mukuba posted 54 tackles, an interception and three breakups as a sophomore. He followed that up with 42 tackles and six breakups as a junior before transferring to Texas. Had by far his most productive season in 2024 — 69 tackles, five interceptions and seven breakups.

Positives

A productive four-year starter for two highly-regarded programs, with a very encouraging trajectory the past two seasons. About half of his career snaps came as a high safety, about a third from the slot and the rest as a box safety. At Texas, Mukuba played as a high safety much more often than he had previously; roles were relatively interchangeable and he would often shade over a bunch, rather than exclusively or even primarily playing single-high.

Mukuba is a long, lanky and very flexible safety who plays fast, with excellent speed and some decisive play at times. Shows good balance and very quick feet in his backpedal, with the range to play single-high and provide effective support out to either sideline. Flashes the ability to aggressively undercut throwing lanes. His playmaking/ball skills took a big step forward this past season, showing soft hands and a wide radius, with nice adjustments.

Has extensive experience shading over the slot or coming down closer to the line of scrimmage, with a nice athletic profile for work against opposing receivers. Pulls the trigger quickly on rushing attempts and flies downhill with good willingness and impressive range. Length gives him a wide radius. He stuffed the stat sheet with tackles this past year.

Negatives

Has about the functional strength you’d expect given his lanky frame and may be asked to add some additional bulk once he gets to the pros. Not the most reliable tackler, missing about one in eight over his career, per Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Mukuba has the occasional clunky transition from backpedaling when working as a high safety. Snaps in deep zones were significantly higher this past season. Is still developing his ability to anticipate/process route combinations from zone. May struggle to match up against opposing tight ends in coverage. Year-to-year play has been somewhat inconsistent.

Summary

A very toolsy safety with four years of starting experience and extensive work in different roles, he was probably more of a mid-round candidate before this season. Transferring to Texas spurred by far his best season yet. His excellent length, speed and quickness were highlighted in a more high-zone scheme than he had played in at Clemson.

Mukuba showed off some impressive ball skills this season as well. Was asked to do a lot when at Clemson, but probably projects as more of a high-zone option in the future, with occasional work shaded over slot receivers, which fits his physical profile much better than box work. With improved anticipation and processing, could develop into a nice starter.
