Fantasy Hockey Trade Advice: Kevin Fiala, Alex Pietrangelo, Lane Hutson

Fantasy Hockey Trade Advice: Kevin Fiala, Alex Pietrangelo, Lane Hutson

We’re heading into Week 14 of the 2024-25 fantasy hockey season. Can you believe we’re already halfway through the first month of the new year? Time flies when you’re having fun. I don’t know about you, but I am having fun.

My fantasy team is hanging in there, and my real-life hockey team has games on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday in the Raleigh, N.C. area. I will find out a lot about my cardio in the next few days. One thing is for certain, you do not want me in the ‘buy’ section, unless, of course, you get massive points for penalty minutes (ha). Hooking, roughing and tripping are my most common infractions.

NHL Fantasy Hockey Trade Advice (Week 14)

Buy

Kevin Fiala (LW – LAK)

It’s hard to believe, but Kevin Fiala is only 28 years old. It seems like he has been around for a while. Anyway, the Swiss-born left winger left his offense in 2024. In five games since the ball dropped to ring in 2025, he is scoreless with a +1 rating and 14 shots on goal (SOG) with two penalty minutes (PIM) in five games.

Fiala closed out December with four goals in his final five games, including one on the power play. You might be able to find an unsuspecting fantasy manager who has an itchy trigger finger but act quickly. Fiala isn’t likely to be ice-cold for very long. He has 14 goals and 22 points through 40 games, but a -10 rating is certainly a drawback.

If you’re in a pool that does not count +/-, even better. Fiala is on pace for 28 goals, including 10 on the power play, with 44 points. He has scored 72+ points in each of his past three seasons, so he could go bonkers for a while in January, February and/or March. The hot streak could be just around the corner, so get moving.

Alex Pietrangelo (D – VGK)

Unlike Fiala, veteran rearguard Alex Pietrangelo is no spring chicken at 34 years old. He was a first-round pick (No. 4 overall) by the St. Louis Blues way back in 2008. He is no longer relied upon to be a big-time scorer like he was a few years back, scoring 11+ goals in six out of seven seasons from 2016 to 2023.

However, he can still be very serviceable for points, and his +15 rating is pretty solid. Pietrangelo is also known for decent behavior, so if you’re in a fantasy pool that discourages PIM, he is a good addition. Pietrangelo has managed to go scoreless in the past six games while posting a dismal -4 rating in the past four outings.

Use that cold streak to your benefit in trade talks, but like Fiala above, you’ll need to act quickly. The low-price window isn’t going to stay open very long, and it could slam shut at any minute.

Lane Hutson (D – MTL)

Some casual fantasy players might not necessarily be familiar with Lane Hutson’s game, although those in dynasty pools certainly know the name well. This advice only applies to those in seasonal formats, not keeper leagues. You certainly want to hang onto the young lad in those formats.

Hutson was the team’s second-round pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft (No. 62 overall), and he is paying big dividends for Les Habitants. He has three goals and 35 points. The 20-year-old defenseman from North Barrington, Illinois is on pace for 61 assists and 67 points. I just don’t think that is sustainable, and he is due to hit the rookie wall soon enough.

Hutson looked to be showing signs of slowing from December 28th to January 3rd, when he was scoreless in four straight games, but he has ramped right back up with a goal and eight assists with a +5 rating during his current five-game point streak.

The time is now to talk up Hutson, his youth, his ability on the power play, etc., while trying to land a veteran with a little more staying power. Face it, you likely scooped up Hutson from the waiver wire sometime in December, so it isn’t like you invested in a player who cost you much.

Patrick Kane (RW – DET)

The 36-year-old right-winger is having a resurgent season for the surprising Red Wings, and the offense has been clicking under new bench boss Todd McLellan. Patrick Kane was instrumental in Detroit’s recent seven-game win streak, the longest successful run for the Winged Wheel since the 2012 campaign. Kane potted five goals with 13 points and a +5 rating during the streak, and he had at least one point in each of the games.

While the streak is impressive, you should be able to use it and his familiar big name, to goad another fantasy manager into a bad trade. Kane’s production is not going to continue, unless, of course, he or the Red Wings organization can discover a time machine. Father Time wins every time, and Kane is a little long in the tooth by NHL standards.

We saw him struggle earlier in the season with two goals, seven points and a -3 rating in 10 games in October, while he had a mere one goal and three points with a -3 rating in 10 November outings. He had a slight uptick with four goals in 12 December games, but just seven points and a -2 rating. Kane has overproduced in January, and that’s the point here. Get while the getting is good.
