2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Emery Jones Jr.

Emery Jones Jr. (OT – LSU)

6-foot-6 | 315 Pounds

Background

Emery Jones Jr. is a Baton Rouge native who played both basketball and football in high school before committing to LSU. Took over the starting right tackle job opposite Will Campbell in Week 3 of the 2022 season — started there ever since. Allowed five sacks in 2022 and two in 2023, but cut that down to just one in 2024.

Positives

Big, well-built right tackle with three years of starting experience for a major program; has a thick lower body with good weight distribution. Plays with a tough, physical temperament, working hard through the whistle to stay connected. Has a lot of strength in his hands to jolt defenders on contact. Does a nice job of keeping his feet churning after contact. Finishes when given the opportunity, showing an impressive killer instinct.

Jones has adequate flexibility and knee-bend in his pass sets, generally doing a nice job of keeping his back straight. Not the most agile or graceful tackle, but does a pretty good job of using his size and technique to protect the edge. LSU felt comfortable leaving him on an island against opposing pass-rushers. Absorbs power well, dropping an early anchor and being more comfortable dealing with bull-rushers. Pretty active with his hands, playing with some extension.

Negatives

Snap-to-snap consistency has been an issue, although Jones has shown improvement throughout his collegiate career. Balance issues crop up on tape; plays out of control too often and has a tendency to fall off of blocks to either side. Not always successful at getting a grip on the pads inside. Hands find themselves outside more than you’d like, which could lead to being penalty-prone at the next level. Committed six penalties as a freshman but has improved in this regard.

Would like to see more accuracy with Jones’ punch; a bit too much of a catch-and-ride type. Can struggle to pivot and recover in pass protection when he gets his feet planted; needs to sell out to protect the edge and can be vulnerable to inside moves. Flagged 10 times this past year (one declined.) Has very little experience anywhere except right tackle, which could increase his learning curve if teams decide he’s better suited inside.

Summary

A big, strong, tough right tackle who battles through the snap and has been making strides in his game over the past three years, but who still puts a lot of sloppy snaps on tape.

Consequently, Jones projects as more of a developmental right tackle with the traits to move defenders in a phone booth and handle bull-rushers in the passing game. With patience and a talented offensive line coach he could end up as a starter, but might struggle if he plays too soon.

Projection: Round 3
