Sleeper NFL Draft Prospects
Kyle McCord (QB – Syracuse)
I may be higher on Kyle McCord than most, but I think he has a legitimate chance to become an NFL starting quarterback one day.
At this point, you may remember McCord from his lone starting season with the Ohio State Buckeyes, in which he threw an interception against Michigan. The Buckeyes missed the College Football Playoff (CFP), and from there, he left for Syracuse.
In his lone season with Syracuse, McCord put up big numbers — 4,779 passing yards and a 66% completion rate. He also threw 34 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Admittedly, he had a meltdown-level game against Pitt in which he completed just 54.7% of his passes and five interceptions. Not only did he throw five interceptions, but some were pick-sixes.
Where I think McCord excels is his football IQ and just his ability to make solid throws, mixing up the touch and bullet passes. The football IQ seems ironic after the Pitt game, but I believe a lot of players have outings like that where things just aren’t clicking for whatever reason.
McCord could improve by learning and embracing what he’s capable of. He doesn’t have a rocketship-level arm, and sometimes, I think he may throw off his back foot to try to make Superman-like throws.
If he can reign it in, serve as more of a point guard, and work on limiting turnovers, McCord will have a long career in the NFL. He won’t last long if he continues to turn the ball over at a high rate.
Kyle Monangai (RB – Rutgers)
If your favorite NFL team is looking for a bruising running back on Day 3 that’ll kick the you-know-what out of opposing defenses, Kyle Monangai is your guy.
He’s a great pass protector, and 862 of his 1,279 rushing yards came after contact.
Monangai struggles with his breakaway speed. He could get away with that in college, but I don’t think he can in the NFL.
However, if you want a guy to help move the chains or be a goal-line back, Monangai is excellent for that.
I’d love to see him end up on a team like the Pittsburgh Steelers. They have an offensive coordinator in Arthur Smith who likes to run the ball, and they don’t have a guy like Monangai who will smack a linebacker in the teeth to gut out a yard or two.
Isaac TeSlaa (WR – Arkansas)
I first started learning about Isaac TeSlaa at the Senior Bowl and then the NFL Scouting Combine. He posted some jaw-dropping numbers at the combine.
Look at these measurables and figures:
- 6-foot-3 and 5/8 inches
- 214 pounds
- 10-inch hand size
- 1.51-second 10-yard split
- 4.43-second 40-yard dash
- 39.5-inch vertical jump
- 129-inch broad jump
All of these were in the 74th percentile or better. His vertical was 89th percentile.
TeSlaa’s production in two years at Arkansas wasn’t great, however, he averaged 19.5 yards per catch on 28 receptions this past season.
At the next level, I think he’ll be a solid big slot receiver, and his frame and measurables lead me to believe he’d be a solid blocker.
I’d be curious to see how TeSlaa would do on long passes, as he seems to get a bit off track if a corner pushes him off his route, but I think there are a lot of fun tools here for a creative coach to unlock.
