Dynasty Rookie Draft Picks

1.06 – TreVeyon Henderson (RB – NE)

Henderson didn’t get the first-round draft capital that we all hoped for, but he landed in the second round with the New England Patriots, so it’s not all doom and gloom. Henderson will compete with Rhamondre Stevenson immediately for touches. The big question that remains unanswered for Henderson is what his weekly volume will look like in the NFL. Will he be a three-down workhorse? Is he destined to be a passing down back that works in on early downs amounting to 9-12 touches weekly? That’s an unknown, but what we do know is that Henderson has the juice to make the most of whatever work comes his way, and his running mate (Stevenson) is an inefficient runner inherited from the previous regime. Last year, Henderson ranked seventh in yards after contact per attempt, tenth in breakaway percentage, and 22nd in receiving grade (per PFF).

2.06 – Cam Skattebo (RB – NYG)

After a monster season for Arizona State in which he had 293-1,711-21 rushing and 45-605-3 receiving, Cam Skattebo now heads to the Giants, where he’ll work in tandem with talented second-year RB Tyrone Tracy. Casual college football fans learned Skattebo’s name when he had 233 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in Arizona State’s overtime loss to Texas in the College Football Playoffs. Skattebo’s ultra-physical style belies his 5-11, 215-pound frame. He has a zest for contact and isn’t going to be brought down with an arm tackle. Skattebo keeps his feet pumping through contact and always seems to be falling forward at the end of runs. This is one ultra-competitive cat. The best guess here is that Skattebo and Tracy split work pretty evenly, but it seems a good bet that Skattebo will a majority of the goal-line carries. Skattebo is worth a first-round pick in 1QB rookie drafts and a late first-round or early second-round pick in superflex rookie drafts.

3.06 – Jalen Royals (WR – KC)

4.06 – Tahj Brooks (RB – CIN)

Brooks lands in Cincy via the sixth round of the NFL Draft. With the depth of his running back class, it isn’t surprising to see him having slipped that far down the board, but it still sucks. Brooks has the talent that should have justified an earlier pick and would have had he come out last year. Brooks will need to hop Zack Moss (assuming health) and Samaje Perine on the depth chart to even be proclaimed as the direct handcuff to Chase Brown. I think he has the talent to do so, but it remains to be seen if he can achieve it. Texas Tech’s run blocking was abysmal last year, and it hurt Brooks’ tackle-breaking numbers. In 2023, he ranked 60th in yards after contact per attempt and 37th in elusive rating (per PFF). Brooks is a nice fourth-round pick and taxi squad candidate for dynasty squads.

5.06 – Brashard Smith (RB – KC)

Brashard Smith is a converted former WR who was highly productive in his one year as a running back for SMU, with 235-1,332-14 last fall. He had 94-898-6 receiving over his final three college seasons — two of them as a WR for the University of Miami-Fla. Smith is a blazer who clocked 22 mph last fall. He bursts through holes and flashes impressive quickness and lateral agility. Smith’s biggest flaw is that he isn’t a tackle-breaker and often goes down on first contact. Although he only has seventh-round draft pedigree, Smith’s speed and pass-catching ability could make him an intriguing weapon for Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and QB Patrick Mahomes.
