Game of the Week

(Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook)

#7 BYU @ #8 Texas Tech (-10.5) | 52.5 | Saturday at Noon EST on ABC

This week’s game of the week takes us to a top-10 Big 12 showdown in Lubbock as the BYU Cougars take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders. BYU star running back LJ Martin has been upgraded to probable and is expected to play on Saturday. His services will be needed against the top-ranked run defense and fifth-ranked scoring defense. Texas Tech also ranks in the top 10 in sacks and quarterback hits.

BYU does have a top-20 scoring and rushing offense, but those are the strongest areas of Texas Tech’s defense. On the flip side, BYU is a top-50 defense in yards allowed and boasts the 16th-ranked scoring defense. Texas Tech has one of the most explosive offenses in the nation, averaging 43.6 points per game (ranks third) and ranks in the top 25 in both rushing and passing yards. BYU is a solid team, but it is the inferior team on paper.

True freshman BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier has played well this season, but he will play in his toughest environment yet. He has only turned the ball over four times and now faces the seventh-ranked defense in forcing turnovers at two per game. I can see BYU keeping this close and hanging around for a half, then Texas Tech running away with the game.

Texas Tech’s slimmest win margin this season was 23 points against Kansas State last week. They look to be a level above their Big 12 counterparts, even with a loss against Arizona State.

My Picks:

  • Moneyline: Texas Tech (-350)
  • Spread: Texas Tech -10.5 (-108)
  • Total: Over 52.5 (-105)

Devy Spotlight

Jayce Brown (WR – Kansas State) | 2026

Jayce Brown has been quietly having his third straight solid season for Kansas State. He has gone over the 100-yard mark in three games so far. He’s not a physical specimen, but he’s also not the smallest receiver at 6-foot-0 and 180 pounds.

Brown has a great combination of speed, route running and run-after-the-catch ability, making him a name to keep an eye on heading into draft season in a wide receiver class that most are still trying to figure out.

Heisman Trophy Race

The top five Heisman Trophy favorites after Week 10:

  1. Julian Sayin (QB – Ohio State) | +175
  2. Fernando Mendoza (QB – Indiana) | +220
  3. Ty Simpson (QB – Alabama) | +340
  4. Marcel Reed (QB – Texas A&M) | +650
  5. Gunner Stockton (QB – Georgia) | +2500

Julian Saying has finally leaped to the top spot this week after a very efficient game against Penn State, going 20-of-23 for 316 yards and four touchdowns. Fellow Big Ten signal-caller Fernando Mendoza drops one spot and saw his odds shortened to +220 from +250 last week. Indiana remained perfect after a road win over Maryland, but was carried by the rushing attack as Mendoza only threw for 201 yards and one touchdown.

Ty Simpson drops one spot and went from +350 to +340 odds during Alabama’s bye week. Similar to Simpson, Marcel Reed remained in the fourth spot, but his odds dropped from +500 to +650 during Texas A&M’s bye week.

The lone newcomer this week is Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton after a win over rival Florida, where he accounted for 234 yards and two touchdowns. On the outside looking in at +4000 odds are Jeremiah Smith and Jeremiyah Love, who both can put up video game numbers any week and see their odds rise.
