Fantasy Football Boom Starts & Bust Sits (Week 17)

It’s fantasy football championship week, so we need to make informed lineup decisions in this do-or-die spot. The best way to do so is to focus on the matchup, consider the game script and compare your thoughts with FantasyPros’ expert consensus rankings (ECR).

You’ll find three fantasy football booms to start and three busts to bench for Week 17. With that in mind, let’s make those lineup decisions easier for you in Week 17.

Fantasy Football Week 17 Start/Sit Advice

Fantasy Football Boom Starts

Trevor Lawrence (QB – JAX) at IND

Trevor Lawrence has arrived. The former first overall pick and generational prospect is finally living up to expectations. Lawrence looks fully comfortable in Liam Coen’s offense.

Since Week 12, Lawrence is averaging 27.3 fantasy points per game — by far the overall QB1 during that stretch. Up next is a matchup versus a Colts defense that Brock Purdy just picked apart.

Ashton Jeanty (RB – LV) vs. NYG

Ashton Jeanty absolutely smashed in a tough matchup against the Texans last week, finishing as the overall RB1 for the week. It was a surprising result considering what he had done lately, but it puts him firmly within the circle of trust for Week 17.

Up next is a smash spot at home against the Giants, who are allowing the second-most fantasy points per game to running backs this season. With Brock Bowers out, expect Jeanty to be the absolute focal point of the Raiders’ offense.

Brian Thomas Jr. (WR – JAX) at IND

Brian Thomas Jr. is probably the biggest bust in fantasy football this year, failing to even come close to his first-round average draft position (ADP) expectations. However, this feels like a boom week versus the Colts.

For whatever reason, Thomas has done well against this defense throughout his career. In three games against the Colts, Thomas has at least 80 receiving yards. I’m betting that Thomas reaches his ceiling in this one.

Fantasy Football Bust Sits

Baker Mayfield (QB – TB) at MIA

We just saw the Dolphins’ defense get shredded by Joe Burrow, but I’m still hesitant to start Baker Mayfield because of how poorly he’s played in recent weeks.

Since Week 7, Mayfield is averaging only 13.7 fantasy points per game, which ranks as the fantasy QB27 during that stretch. It’s hard to rely on that when you’re in the fantasy football championship.

Rico Dowdle (RB – CAR) vs. SEA

Rico Dowdle has put up only 9.1 fantasy points per game since Week 12, which ranks as the fantasy RB36 during that stretch. That makes it difficult to rely on him, even as the Panthers fight to get into the playoffs.

It’s a tough matchup against the Seahawks, who are allowing the second-fewest fantasy points per game to running backs this season.

Wan’Dale Robinson (WR – NYG) at LV

Wan’Dale Robinson has been a nice surprise for the Giants this season, but how can we rely on him when we saw how run-heavy this offense was last week?

The Giants clearly prefer to lose this game against the Raiders, since the loser will pretty much lock in the first overall pick in this year’s draft. With that in mind, I suggest avoiding all Giants this week.
