Fantasy Baseball 10 Burning Questions

1. Who is the best bet for saves for the Dodgers?

Edwin Diaz was placed on the injured list (IL) with an elbow issue. He’s having surgery to remove loose bodies, putting him out until after the All-Star break.

The best bet for saves is Tanner Scott, who signed a four-year, $72 million deal last offseason and looks back to form. While the Dodgers will mix and match at times, Scott should see the majority of save opportunities, making him a must-add in all formats.

2. How high should we value Robert Suarez?

Raisel Iglesias was placed on the IL with a shoulder issue. Reports indicate that he “slept on his shoulder wrong.” As with any shoulder injury, we should temper our expectations when it comes to his return date.

Robert Suarez could be one of the best closers in fantasy baseball in Iglesias’ absence. With Suarez’s stuff, there’s a chance that he can take the job and run away with it. There’s also a chance Suarez is a top-five rest-of-season reliever.

3. Is Caleb Thielbar the Cubs’ closer?

Caleb Thielbar has a 32.4% strikeout rate with one save in Daniel Palencia‘s absence. He’s the best bet for saves for the Cubs moving forward.

Palencia is dealing with an oblique issue, so there’s a chance he is out for a few weeks. If you’re desperate for saves, it makes sense to ride the wave with Thielbar. Who knows, he may keep the job.

4. Is Enyel De Los Santos the Astros’ closer?

With Bryan Abreu struggling mightily, the Astros have turned to Enyel De Los Santos, who doesn’t have a great strikeout rate normally associated with closers, but his command has been great (3.4% walk rate). As with Thielbar, you can ride with De Los Santos until Josh Hader returns (late May, at the earliest).

5. How good is Chase Dollander?

Chase Dollander has dominated so far this season, putting up a 2.63 SIERA and 28.7% strikeout rate. The Rockies have been using him in bulk relief, which can be a valuable role in fantasy, since he gets to avoid one trip through the top of the order.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Rockies deploy Dollander as a traditional starter. Simply put, he’s been too dominant not to start.

6. Is Jordan Romano losing his closer role?

Jordan Romano blew consecutive saves at Yankee Stadium. With Kirby Yates almost back from injury, there’s concern Romano could lose his job. I wouldn’t drop Romano to the waiver wire just yet, but we have to monitor his next appearance very closely. My hunch is that he keeps the job.

7. Is Kodai Senga cooked?

Kodai Senga has gotten absolutely rocked in his last two starts, which was surprising considering how good he looked in his previous two turns. He should bounce back in his next outing at home against the Twins. Pick him up if he was dropped.

8. What should we expect from Zack Wheeler?

Temper your expectations on Zack Wheeler when he’s back; he hasn’t regained his velocity just yet. Results in his rehab assignments were inconsistent. It may take Wheeler until the second half of the season before he gets back to what he used to be.

9. How hyped should we be about Payton Tolle?

Payton Tolle is an intriguing pitching prospect for the Red Sox. He could get a couple of starts with Sonny Gray placed on the IL due to a hamstring strain. What if Tolle comes up and looks dominant? Would Boston consider replacing Brayan Bello with Tolle upon Gray’s return? It’s possible, making Tolle a must-add in all formats.

10. When will Robby Snelling get called up?

Robby Snelling has been absolutely dominant at Triple-A, putting up a 1.89 ERA and a 41.9% strikeout rate in 19 innings. With Chris Paddack and Janson Junk struggling, it’s only a matter of time before we see Snelling with the Marlins. With Payton Tolle up, Snelling is now the top stash in fantasy baseball.
