Monday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings (4/6)
Chris Sale (SP – ATL) at Los Angeles Angels
Chris Sale is off to a fast start. According to FanGraphs, in two starts spanning 12 innings this season, Sale has recorded the following stats.
- 2 wins
- 2 quality starts
- 0.75 ERA
- 2.84 xERA
- 3.97 xFIP
- 3.85 SIERA
- 0.58 WHIP
- 7.1% walk rate
- 21.4% strikeout rate
- 10.8 SwStr%
- 29.9 CSW%
- 110 stuff+
- 110 location+
- 114 pitching+
Sale’s strikeout rate and swinging-strike rate aren’t as great as usual, but his pitch modeling is still pristine, and he’s kept opponents off the scoreboard. The veteran lefty has also thrived since winning the National League Cy Young Award in his first year with the Braves in 2024.
Mike Trout is day-to-day after suffering a hand contusion when he was hit by a pitch, leaving a top-heavy group of projected hitters for the Angels for today. Six projected starters have an 88 wRC+ or worse against lefties since 2024, and the Angels award Sale tons of strikeout upside. In addition, Sale’s betting info is sweet. The Braves are -158 favorites, and the game’s total is a pitcher-friendly 7.5 runs.
Jacob deGrom (SP – TEX) vs. Seattle Mariners
Jacob deGrom is an upside GPP pick. The Mariners have a deep projected lineup of hitters with track records of success against righties. However, they also award deGrom with strikeout upside, as four of the projected starters have at least a 27% strikeout rate versus righties since 2024, with seven registering a strikeout rate of at least 21.8%.
The veteran righty’s betting info is also good. The Rangers are -125 favorites, and the game’s total is 7.5 runs. Finally, deGrom has excelled at home. In 15 starts spanning 88 innings at home last season, deGrom spun a 2.35 ERA, 3.37 xFIP, 0.93 WHIP, 5.6% walk rate and 26.3% strikeout rate.
Andrew Painter (SP – PHI) at San Francisco Giants
Andrew Painter took some lumps in Triple-A last season, as evidenced by his 5.40 ERA in 22 starts across 106.2 innings. However, his 4.34 xFIP wasn’t as damning, and context is also critical. Painter missed the entire 2023 and 2024 seasons while dealing with an elbow injury and undergoing Tommy John surgery in July of 2023. His highest level of pre-injury experience was just five starts and 28.1 innings at the Double-A level.
Painter broke camp with the Phillies, and he dazzled in his only start this season. The 22-year-old righty allowed just one run on four hits and one walk with eight strikeouts against the Nationals. He also had a 9.5% SwStr%, 31% CSW%, 103 stuff+, 117 location+ and 117 pitching+ in that start.
The betting info is eye-catching for Painter. The Phillies are slight favorites (-115), and the game’s total is an unimposing eight runs. Painter is an OK selection in GPPs on FanDuel, but he’s a more appealing SP2 in all game types at DraftKings.
Suggested Lineup Stacks
- Road (Coors Field)
- Game Total/Moneyline: 10.0 Runs/HOU -200
Ryan Feltner has a 5.15 ERA, 4.50 xERA, 4.46 xFIP and 4.54 SIERA in 69 career appearances (68 starts) for the Rockies. Predictably, he’s struggled in his home ballpark. Feltner had a 4.60 ERA and 3.36 xFIP in 15.2 innings at home last year and a 5.10 ERA and 3.84 xFIP in 77.2 innings at home in 2024. For his career, Feltner has a 5.87 ERA and 4.37 xFIP in 153.1 innings at home. The Astros should rough him up, and that’s reflected in the betting info.
- Road (Rogers Centre)
- Game Total/Moneyline: 8.5 Runs/LAD -135
Father Time is undefeated, and Max Scherzer had a 5.19 ERA, 4.62 xERA, 4.55 xFIP and 5.19 SIERA in 17 starts for the Blue Jays last season. He was sharp in his 2026 debut, but it should be taken with a grain of salt since it was against the Rockies away from Coors Field. The Dodgers’ left-handed batters are especially appealing to stack against Scherzer, as he’s coughed up a .351 wOBA to 210 left-handed batters since last season.
Core Studs
- Yordan Alvarez is annihilating opposing pitching this year. In 45 plate appearances this season, Alvarez has hit four homers with 10 runs, 10 RBI, one stolen base, a .578 on-base percentage (OBP), .500 ISO, .589 wOBA and 287 wRC+.
- Freddie Freeman has hit 33 homers with a .382 OBP, .206 ISO, .377 wOBA and 144 wRC+ in 895 plate appearances against righties since 2024.
- Jeremy Pena has ripped 24 round-trippers with a .331 OBP, .144 ISO, .328 wOBA and 113 wRC+ in 935 plate appearances against righties since 2024. He also adds speed, stealing 20 bases in 125 games last year and one through five games this season.
Value Plays/Punts
- Max Muncy has mashed 26 taters with a .396 OBP, .239 ISO, .383 wOBA and 148 wRC+ in 548 plate appearances against righties since 2024.
- Alex Freeland‘s 92 wRC+ in 99 career plate appearances against righties since reaching The Show last year doesn’t jump off the page. Yet, per Baseball Savant, he hit 12 home runs with a .384 wOBA and .355 expected wOBA (xwOBA) in 365 plate appearances against righties in Triple-A last season.
- Dylan Beavers hit along his climb up the minor-league ladder, and he’s done well with the platoon advantage in the Majors. In 131 plate appearances against righties for the Orioles, Beavers has four homers with a .377 OBP, .174 ISO and 133 wRC+.

Yordan Alvarez (OF – HOU): 2.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs — Higher
Yordan Alvarez positively correlates with Carlos Correa, making it appealing to use them together in pick’em cards on Underdog. Alvarez has cleared 2.5 hits + runs + RBIs in eight out of 10 games this season, and he’ll get a lift from the hitting conditions at Coors Field tonight.
