Notes
You could argue that Cole should be higher, and there's no real argument against it. With a pitcher signing a new contract, coming off a career year, in a loaded division, in a hitter-friendly stadium, there's reason enough to have some pause on him.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
When Jacob deGrom posted his historic 2018 numbers en route to his Cy Young, we knew that there would be regression coming in 2019. Carrying over a 1.70 ERA, 1.94 average against, and a 0.91 WHIP wasn't sustainable, and we knew that. For his encore in 2019, he posted a 2.43 ERA, .205 average against, and a 0.97 WHIP. So when people mention that Flaherty's second half is the driving force around his price tag, they aren't wrong. His second half was historic - especially compared to his first half of 2019, where he struggled mightly. But even with regression to his second-half numbers - 0.91 ERA, .142 average against, and 0.71 WHIP - Flaherty has the pedigree, sample size, and stuff to be the ace for your team. Don't overthink it."
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
There are really no words for what Cole was able to do last year. He built on the massive gains he made from his first year with the Astros and lowered his ERA, WHIP, and walk rate to miniscule levels while totaling an outrageous 326 strikeouts. He'll move to the Yankees now, which is a mild downgrade given that the Yankees may slightly limit his innings in light of their long-term investment in Cole and their bullpen, and the opposing offenses and ballparks in the AL East compared to the AL West. But Cole's fastball and slider are beyond elite, and he should be the top pitcher taken in fantasy drafts.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
If ever there were a tale of two halves, it was Flaherty's 2019 season. A 4.64 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP in the first half, followed by a preposterous 0.91 ERA and 0.71 WHIP in the second half. His strikeout rate jumped, his walk rate dropped, and he saw a gain of almost a mile per hour on his fastball. The real Flaherty likely lies somewhere in between his first and second halves, but that should be a top-10 pitcher in 2020.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
I believe that pitching has become thin enough that elite SP are worth reaching for, something I didn't agree with in previous years. 20 Wins and 225K's seem like a lock in 2020. That makes Cole my 2020 #1 SP and a Top 10 selection .
Chris Mitchell - FantasyData
