Gerrit Cole traded to Astros

The Astros have acquired Gerrit Cole from the Pirates in exchange for Colin Moran, Joe Musgrove, Michael Feliz and Jason Martin. (Ken Rosenthal on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

Cole is coming off a down season, during which he pitched to a 4.26 ERA. Though he should bounce back, he'll obviously be pitching in a tougher league with the Astros, though he won't need to take on the ace role at this point. In the end, his value changes only minimally with the move, as there are plenty of positives (playing on a better team) and negatives (pitching in the American League).

The initial reaction for most would seem to say the trade hurts the Fantasy value of Cole since he's going from the National to American League. The gap between the two leagues in ERA was minimal in 2017 (4.37 compared to a 4.34 ERA in the National League). Cole was hurt by 31 home runs last season. He pitched 203 innings and had a 4.26 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 196:55 K:BB ratio. However, Cole only allowed 36 homers throughout his first four seasons. Expect a bounce-back season as the Astros SP3.
