Hurston Waldrep working to reintroduce curveball into arsenal

Hurston Waldrep is focusing on redeveloping his curveball this spring after previously shelving the pitch, per Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Atlanta initially had Waldrep refine his slider after drafting him in the first round in 2023, believing it would better complement his elite splitter. Now that he’s comfortable with the slider, he’s turning his attention back to the curveball as an additional weapon against left-handed hitters.

Fantasy Impact:

Waldrep’s curveball fits well with his fastball out of his arm slot, and he spent the offseason studying how elite pitchers like Gerrit Cole, Max Scherzer, and Justin Verlander utilize the pitch. While he’s likely to begin the season at Triple-A Gwinnett, adding another reliable breaking ball could help accelerate his path to a regular MLB rotation spot. However, control and command remain his biggest hurdles. Fantasy managers in dynasty and deep leagues should monitor his progress, as he could be a midseason call-up if he sharpens his command.
