Morel signed a one-year, $2 million deal with Miami in December as a career outfielder being asked to take over at first base, and he needed to demonstrate he could handle the position defensively in camp. His glovework has been acceptable. Over the past two seasons with the Cubs and Rays, he hit .204/.288/.363 with a 29.3 percent strikeout rate but clubbed 32 home runs across 257 games — and he's slashing just .135 with a 3:13 BB:K and no home runs through 37 spring plate appearances.

Morel is expected to open the season as Miami's starting first baseman. If he struggles, Griffin Conine could take on a larger role at first base later in the year.
