Cionel Perez may see opportunities to close for the Orioles if Felix Bautista (shoulder) is not ready to begin the season for the club according to manager Brandon Hyde.
Perez was one of reliable options as part of a Baltimore bullpen that surprised many last season and could see some early-season save opportunities if Bautista is not cleared in time to begin the season. The left-hander posted a 1.40 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 66 relief appearances during the 2022 season.
Lionel Perez faced five batters and recorded zero strikeouts while allowing zero runs, one walk, and one hit to earn the save in Sunday's 10-7 win over the Royals.
Perez owns a 0.93 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP to go along with 19 strikeouts on the season. With Jorge Lopez locked in as the O's primary closer, Perez might not see another save opportunity for awhile.
Orioles reliever Cionel Perez threw two scoreless innings against the Twins on Wednesday. His final line included one hit, one walk, and one strikeout. He also earned his first win of 2022 as Baltimore ultimately defeated Minnesota by a score of 9-4.
Perez has now delivered nine scoreless innings this season. However, between his low win total, lack of save opportunities, and 8.00 K/9 and 4.00 BB/9 rates, he doesn't have much fantasy appeal.
