The Orioles optioned Cole Irvin to Triple-A Norfolk Sunday.
Irvin made just one appearance out of the bullpen since being recalled from Triple-A on May 16. Irvin will likely slide back into the rotation in Triple-A and likely will not be recalled until the Orioles have a spot in the rotation they need filled.
Cole Irvin has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, per to Roch Kubatko.
Irvin struggled for the third consecutive start, so the move does not come as a surprise. He allowed five hits, two walks, and six earned runs over four innings in Thursday’s win over Oakland. Fantasy managers can comfortably move on from Irvin.
Cole Irvin allowed four hits, four walks, and three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched Saturday. He struck out five Yankees’ hitters and earned his second loss of the season.
Irvin threw 64% of his 101 pitches for strikes, but had a rough fifth inning that saw the Yankees’ take the lead. The 29-year-old lefty has a 9.35 ERA in 8 2/3 innings pitched this season. Irvin will need to turn it around in his next start, but for now fantasy managers can leave him on the waiver wire.
Cole Irvin allowed eight hits, two walks, and six earned runs over four innings Sunday. He struck out four Red Sox batters and took the loss.
Irvin got into trouble early Sunday, allowing a run in each of the first three innings. The Orioles pitching staff has allowed nine runs in each of the three games this series. Irvin should only be a fantasy option on rosters that are dealing with injuries.
The Oakland Athletics have traded left-handed pitcher Cole Irvin to the Baltimore Orioles.
The A's received prospect Darell Hernaiz in return for a pitcher who was likely their Opening Day starter. The A's also included pitching prospect Kyle Virbitsky in the exchange. Irvin was a staple in the A's rotation over the last two seasons, making 62 starts with a 4.11 ERA/4.25 FIP in that time. While durable, Irvin's 16.8% K% over the last two seasons ranks 34th of 35 qualified pitchers, thus capping his fantasy value. He should slot in near the top of the Orioles' rotation in 2023.
