Palencia struck out the first two batters he faced in the ninth before Austin Riley reached base on a single. The hard-throwing righty ended the game by retiring Dominic Smith on a liner to center. Palencia, who spent roughly three weeks on the IL earlier in the year, is a perfect 3-for-3 in save situations this season and has a 2.25 ERA with a 9:2 K:BB ratio in eight innings. He is firmly entrenched as the Cubs' closer and should have plenty of save opportunities moving forward.

Palencia was summoned from the bullpen with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth as Gavin Hollowell struggled to close out the Reds. The Cubs' closer struck out pinch-hitter Nathaniel Lowe on a challenged called strike three that was upheld to record his second save of the season. Palencia, who spent a couple of weeks on the IL, has not been scored upon in seven appearances this season and has a 6:2 K:BB ratio in 6.1 innings of work.

Palencia ends up missing right around three weeks. The young righty should soon be right back in his typical closer gig. Prior to the injury, Palencia had recorded one save while logging five scoreless innings in five appearances this season.
