Darwinzon Hernandez strikes out the side on Thursday

Darwinzon Hernandez pitched a clean eighth inning on Thursday striking out all three batters he faced.

Fantasy Impact

This was a step in the right direction for Hernandez. The lefty fanned Joey Gallo, Adolis Garcia, and Nate Lowe in order. He now owns a 4.50 ERA, and has ten strikeouts over eight innings pitched. If he can continue to hone his stuff, there is a chance that he could be a solid option for the Red Sox late in games this season.

Darwinzon Hernandez (shoulder) lands on the IL

Darwinzon Hernandez was sent to the IL with a sprained SC joint.

Fantasy Impact

The young reliever was just activated from the COVID-19 injured list on August 20th and threw 4.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts before injuring himself. With the regular season winding down it's doubtful Hernandez will return to make an impact in 2020.

Darwinzon Hernandez (COVID-19) activated from the IL

Darwinzon Hernandez was activated off the IL after testing positive for COVID-19 before the start of Red Sox summer camp.

Fantasy Impact

Hernandez has yet to pitch in 2020 as he missed the first month of the season. He'll start the year in the Sox bullpen; he registered a 4.45 ERA, 1.75 WHIP, and a 57:26 K/BB ratio over 30.1 innings in 2019. Infielder Christian Arroyo was optioned in a corresponding move.

Darwinzon Hernandez to start out as a reliever

Darwinzon Hernandez (not injury related) is expected to begin as a reliever once he rejoins the Red Sox's roster but could slot into the rotation after that, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Fantasy Impact

Hernandez posted a 4.45 ERA in 29 outings (one start) as a 22-year-old rookie last year. He struck out 57 in 30 ⅓ innings, but he also walked 26 batters. The team is desperate for starting pitching so it would not be surprising if he ends up in the rotation at some point this season.

Darwinzon Hernandez (COVID-19) 'a ways away'

Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke says Darwinzon Hernandez is still "a ways away."

Fantasy Impact

Roenicke added that Hernandez is "gassed" after throwing 20 pitches. The lefty tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this month and just arrived to summer camp over the weekend. When healthy he is expected to serve an important role in Boston's bullpen this season.
