Darwinzon Hernandez

Red Sox reliever Darwinzon Hernandez allowed four runs, four hits, and two walks against the Royals on Thursday. Most of the damage came on a Salvador Perez three-run homer. He struck out just one batter over two innings and was charged with the loss as Boston ultimately fell to Kansas City by a score of 7-3.

The loss appears next to Hernandez's name, though it's fair to view Alex Cora's mismanagement of the bullpen as the reason why Boston lost. Hernandez was promoted to the majors in July and allowed five earned runs through just 3 2/3 innings during the course of the month. Thursday's rough outing further increased his ERA to 14.29 on the year.

The Red Sox have optioned LHP Darwinzon Hernandez to AAA Worcester. The plan is to stretch him out as a starter. The Sox also want to see more strike-throwing and consistency from him overall.

The 22-year old struggled in Spring Training, but it looks like the Sox have a plan for him to improve. He was primarily a starter in the minors but only started 1 game with Boston in 2019. It will be worth looking at how this progresses as the season goes on. Hernandez has a lot of potential and could benefit the Red Sox sooner than later given their current pitching depth.

This was a step in the right direction for Hernandez. The lefty fanned Joey Gallo, Adolis Garcia, and Nate Lowe in order. He now owns a 4.50 ERA, and has ten strikeouts over eight innings pitched. If he can continue to hone his stuff, there is a chance that he could be a solid option for the Red Sox late in games this season.

The young reliever was just activated from the COVID-19 injured list on August 20th and threw 4.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts before injuring himself. With the regular season winding down it's doubtful Hernandez will return to make an impact in 2020.
