Blue Jays pitcher David Phelps underwent season-ending surgery on his right lat Tuesday.
Phelps was placed on the 10-day injured list with a lat strain in early May. He underwent surgery on his right lat and will miss the rest of the season. Tough blow for the Blue Jays bullpen as Phelps was excellent before being placed on the injured list. Phelps finishes the 2021 season with a 0.87 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 15 strikeouts across 10 1/3 innings.

Phelps exited Wednesday’s win over the Athletics with a right lat strain. There is no timetable for his return and he will miss at least the next ten days. Hyun Jin Ryu was reinstated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move.

Phelps has been a reliable reliever for the Jays so far this season. He'll be reevaluated on Thursday.

The Phillies declined to pick up Phelps' 2021 option following the season. He returns to Toronto where he spent part of the 2019 campaign. Phelps struggled mightily down the stretch last summer and will likely pitch in a middle relief role for the Blue Jays.
David Phelps had his option declined by the Philadelphia Phillies. The right-hander went 2-4 this year with a 6.53 ERA.
This news comes as no surprise, considering Phelps seriously struggled in Philadelphia with a 12.91 ERA in just 7.2 innings pitched after being traded by the Brewers at the trade deadline.
