Relief pitcher David Phelps has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball.
Fantasy Impact
Phelps enjoyed an impressive 15-year professional career, 10 of which were spent in the big leagues. The right-hander made 300 of his 367 career appearances out of the bullpen, working to a rock-solid 3.80 ERA/3.87 FIP in that time. Phelps certainly goes out on a high note after crafting a 2.83 ERA/3.16 FIP across 65 appearances with the Blue Jays in 2022.

Phelps was placed on the 10-day injured list with a lat strain in early May. He underwent surgery on his right lat and will miss the rest of the season. Tough blow for the Blue Jays bullpen as Phelps was excellent before being placed on the injured list. Phelps finishes the 2021 season with a 0.87 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 15 strikeouts across 10 1/3 innings.

David Phelps was removed from Wednesday's appearance against the A's due to shoulder discomfort.
Fantasy Impact
Phelps has been a reliable reliever for the Jays so far this season. He'll be reevaluated on Thursday.

Fantasy Impact
The Phillies declined to pick up Phelps' 2021 option following the season. He returns to Toronto where he spent part of the 2019 campaign. Phelps struggled mightily down the stretch last summer and will likely pitch in a middle relief role for the Blue Jays.
